Just wondering if there's any interest in setting up a hiking & camping sub-forum? I know we don't want to compete with other forums, but it would be great to have a place in which to share pictures from your latest trip, describe good hikes, review gear, and generally gawk at others' hiking/camping stuff. Speaking for myself, I know I carry a lot of my EDC items while in the great outdoors.

Thanks!

:)

[Edit: Or maybe it could be called something like the Outdoors Forum, "Share your EDC experiences while in the great outdoors."]

I'm interested in contributing to such a thing.

I like that idea.

It also seems to me that there are a considerable number of folks who qualify their edc based on whether they are in normal every day life versus when they are in the woods. I'm a firm believer that context is really important. EDC for an LEO is much different than for a delivery person or an office worker. What I consider is essential gear in the city is very different from what I feel naked without in the woods.

Strictly speaking, I'm not in the woods every day, so I don't feel comfortable calling the gear that I carry only on hiking/camping trips EDC. In my ideal life, I'd be hiking and camping all the time and it would be EDC.

30' of paracord in the city. No thanks. 50' on a camping trip: you better believe it!

Perhaps there is room for areas that focus on this kind of context specific edc.

I like the idea too.

I think many of the EDCF members have a good deal of outdoor activity in their lives.

Adding this category might be another way to intice members into sharing their EDC experiences.

I think that would fill a gap in this forum as we certainly edc in the great outdoors. I currently visit other forums for outdoor-related threads. Great idea!

Any thoughts from the Mods?

Any thoughts from the Mods?We feel camping and hiking items are already been discussed in the categories available (knives, flashlights, clothing, bags, etc.). This doesn't mean the option is not open to further consideration, though. :)

I would imagine that at the very least one can share their pictures and experiences in the General Discussion board or Breakroom(?).

I really like seeing the outdoor references as I have never really been camping before. Born and raised here in bay area (Fl.). Summertime is a No-Go for me as the mosquitoes are horrendous and my wife detests staying outdoors. Her idea of camping is staying at a Motel 6. Can't live without hot water and a working toilet.

Oh well, thanks for considering it though! :)

Nice to know there are other folks into the outdoors here as well.

Disinterested here. To me the site is about EDC, not about modal use of EDC if that makes sense. It's fine to talk about camping in the various fora, as it pertains to a given thing that you're EDCing on your camp-out. My $0.02. :-X

Resurrecting this ancient thread, dusting it off, and asking if the mods would kindly consider looking at the idea of an outdoors-related sub-forum again. Thanks!

I love hiking and camping. A separate thread sounds like a good idea.

We used to have quite a few hard outdoorsman and women out here. Most of them left due to a few people. Before I became poor I belonged to the App Trail conference and have it about 90% complete. We had a 90 pound young lady that could drag 200 pounds of survey gear through the woods then a mile into a cave doing the belly crawl. We also had a lady that did El Capitan. They did not mention these things. They and a few others left because of some comments, we didn't have that many rules back then. I would have hoped that it would not have bothered them but they got turned off by the what gear for women comments and some of the sexist comments that we used to have in here by some now banned members. Some of the others got into some arguments with a few others.

I will consider it but I do have a concern about it. In some of the clubs that I have belonged to there was sometimes heated argument on what was backpacking, camping, hiking and what wasn't. I have to admit that I have been involved in some of those myself.

I do love the outdoors but my idea and someone elses idea of things probably do not match. I also have to admit that I think most of the gear talked about in this forum is not suitable for backpacking. I would also hate to see someone try using a tactical pack on a 30 or 60 day trek...completely different animals.

I know that a section like this will make me really miss my old life.

If this does happen can it be kept super civil? Of course you can all disagree what defines real camping.

Of course if you are within 2 miles of a road you really are not outside.

Hiking is a great activity for old farts like Myself, I think a forum dedicated to hiking and camping would be a great idea! :agree:
I am mostly limited to weekend hikes on the Cumberland Trail in TN. but one of the reasons I live here is the great scenery and all the forest, mountains, and hiking trails! I can be on the trail in 30 min. or less! :D :luck:

I agree it should definitely be an open, non-specific forum -- how about just making it very general and vague such as "share your outdoors activities, photos, and EDC gear"? That way someone can talk about fishing, another about hunting, another about camping, someone else about hiking, another person to post a trip experience, etc. That way no one thinks it's limited to just certain outdoors activities.

How about we give it a trial run and if the mods or yourself aren't happy with how it's going, it is removed? And maybe we could post a sticky note in the top of the forum to let folks know it's open to anything outdoors related?

Thanks for giving it consideration! And thank you to the folks who have mentioned their interest!

Can this be made to fit an EDC theme?

I will come back later and explain why I am a little hesitant. Some outdoor groups don't always get along well. We had some really hard-core outdoors people that I knew in the first months of the forum. They got driven out of the forums by a couple of people. I think gear disagreements would be bigger than ever is we got certain people in here.

For some things I have been involved in the quality of shoes is the most important thing and you usually can't find that grade of stuff in any stores. My snowshoes used to be so important to me. Only a small amount of the gear talked about in here fits some of the outdoor activities that I have seen.

The main driving force behind me suggesting an outdoors-related sub-forum is to have a good place for EDC members to share outdoors experiences... no matter what activity, where it took place, or what kind of gear was used. I know we can do that now in the General Forum or Travel Forum, but it would be nice to have a dedicated spot to share our ramblings and photos. Plus, it would make it a little easier to go back in time and look at previous threads or informative postings.

My opinion is that no matter where you go you are going to have people who just can't get along well with others, online or elsewhere. Personally I think 99.9% of the folks here on the forums are great people, very friendly and respectful, from all walks of life. It's unfortunate that in the early days of the forums a couple of years ago some members felt compelled to leave by the way others were acting. Honestly, I doubt that it had so much to do with their pursuits (outdoors, firearms, knives, lights, whatever) as much as it had to do with their personality issues.

It really would be too bad if a few rotten apples spoiled things for the rest of us, but no matter what you decide I respect your decision. This ultimately is your web site, and we are only guests here. The work that goes into keeping it running and family-friendly must be monumental, and both you and the staff do an outstanding job! That is one of the main reasons that I have supported the site in the past and will continue to do so in the future. This is a great place to sit down, burn a few minutes, and hopefully learn something new.

I would welcome a separate section on Outdoor activities. I treat camping as a proving ground for my EDC items. When I got around to putting together a BOB, I already had about 85% of the items I needed.

If this does happen can it be kept super civil? Of course you can all disagree what defines real camping.

Of course if you are within 2 miles of a road you really are not outside.

It's comments like this that divide people. Most people in the US and Europe live in areas that developed to the point that there aren't many areas that are farther than 2 miles from a road. I know it was said tongue in cheek.

I like the idea. Living in southern california camping and hiking is not very common so it would be a good new source of information for me. Im only a trail hiker but would love to learn more about the activity from experienced campers and hikers.

I may have maxed out my new forum requests, but I think that I would be interested in such a forum. Might I presume to suggest a fire subforum within that forum? Knives, Lights, and Fire-Lighting Equipment are probably the three most common EDC items, especially for the survival-/preparedness-conscience. In fact many will even carry two methods of fire-starting.

Knives and Lighters have their respective forums, but the Fire-Lighting Equipment doesn't really have a clear location here.

I think there are too many subforums already that don't have enough traffic to support their existance.

All righty then. While it has been decided that a subforum for hiking and camping won't be created at this time, a thread dedicated to hiking and camping can be found here. (http://edcforums.com/index.php?topic=20182.0)
Thanks!
