I'm not anit-gun by any means. I never thougth about carrying one, but I'm putting together a BoB (bug-out-bag) and want to include some self protection.

My dad has this hand gun and has offered it to me. He says it's not accurate at all, but would give it to me, if I wanted it.

What do you think of this hand gun?

Any and all comments are welcome.

Thanks,
Dan

No personal experience with this particular gun, but there are some other points you might consider.
1. Have a good shooter shoot the gun and see if it really is inaccurate, or if it might be the shooter.
2. An inaccurae gun is not worth carrying.
3. The gun should be safe and not jam when you need to use it.
4. Find out the carrying laws in your particular aread before you consider it for use in your BOB bag. Otherwise you might find your survival skills need in a night in jail.

It's a free gun so take it. Test it out and see if it really is inaccurate and maybe it is just fine. You can always sell it and get something you want. Just be sure it is safe before you transfer the ownership to someone else.

A defensive tool is only as good as the user. If you don't take the time/effort to learn to use a handgun, it is a hazard to you. You may be providing a weapon to a foe. As far as "accurate", that is a subjective term. To an Olympic shooter, a 2" group at 25 yards is useless. For me, it's short of a miracle. Any handgun that will shoot 3"-4" group at 25 yards is adequate for self-defense. Take his offer. I would suggest combining the previous suggestions: Take the gun and have an experienced shooter test it for you. If he feels it is inaccurate, send S&W an email explaining the problem. They may be willing to straighten it out. If none of this works out, clean and oil it and put it away as an heirloom for your Dad's grandkids. In your spare time, take a pole here and see how many would love to have something that belonged to their Granddad.

As a side note: If you know nothing or very little about handguns, get a .22 pistol and learn to shoot it. It's an inexpensive way to learn, and it is fun. Then you will have an idea of what you want for self protection. There are a lot of good - very good guns available for reasonable prices, and don't forget the used market.

Good luck in your quest.
