I wanted pick up some extra ammo prior to going to the range this weekend.

Local gun store:
-no 9mm FMJ, been out for over a week and don't know when they're going to get their next shipment
-no slugs of any kind for the shottie, only had buck shot

Walmart Superstore:
-I just found out they don't carry ammo
-Their reasoning, "Sorry, but we don't carry ammo because we're near a school."
Oh gee, there's a school every few miles. You're always going to be near a school.

I thought going to brick-and-mortar stores are supposed to be quick and convenient. I'm just going to have to order online and place a HUGE order and stock up on more ammo than I am used to.

That sucks. I usually stock up on .45 when I get my tex return. But my other calibers I usually just pick up as I go since 9mm is usually pretty cheap. No other sporting goods stores in your area? What about FFL gun show dealers that live in your area? I've been buying all my Mak ammo and my last case of .45 from a local FFL that does my transfers. He keeps a lot in stock.

Yes, buy in bulk of 1k rds. Doesn't take up much space and replenish at the 1/2 way mark. Maybe take up reloading. It's really kind of fun and you can load up lot's during the winter months. A Lee Loadmaster will cost almost as much as 1000 rd. buy in the first loading session.

If you are only shooting 1 caliber, then bulk buy is the way to go.

Could it have been timing around 9/11? Sometimes those items get a run on them in those situations. Some years back, there was a shortage of pistol primers. It got worse as re-loaders started buying up by the case. Stock up as soon as the supply chain replenishes.

Do you have a Dick's Sporting Goods, Cabelas, Bass Pro or Gander Mountain store nearby? A Gander Mountain store just opened 15 minutes from here and a friend phoned tonight to tell me they have great deals on 45acp and 9mm winchester white box ball.

My resolution on jan1 2006 was to buy one box of either 9mm or 45 ammo to stash away for a rainy day..like a **** situation. Ive managed to do that so far. Right now I dont have the ready cash to invest in case lots, but I can manage 10-20 bucks a month on some exta pistol ammo insurance.

I am told by a friend that www.ammoman.com has great deals on 308 military boxer primed FMJ ball right now as well as 7.62x39 ammo. Get yourself some ammo from them, or cheaper than dirt, and buy your shotgun shells or 22 bricks from K mart or a walley world that still sells ammo. (ours still does, but we are in hunting country.)

Buy your ammo when you have extra cash, and you wont be without in a crunch time. :P

You might as well get used to it. The anti-2nd Amendment crowd has been trying to go after ammo sales for years, and their results are starting to show. Stock up now before the tax it more than cigarettes and gasoline.

That's odd...our SuperStore sells ammo and is literally adjacent to the local high school.

But I'm in Texas...

They (and also Academy) told me the reason they never have ammo in stock is because the local gun stores go there and buy them out, then turn around and sell it for quite a bit more. The prices at Academy are really good when they have it in stock (.223 and .45 for me)...but it's hard to catch it there. I try to avoid walmart at all costs.

I read an article about Walmart that stated that a large number of their stores were going to quit selling firearms and ammuntion. At least in CA they are getting a lot of bad press in some areas for being anyway involved in selling those "evil" items.

I'm in California. That's the problem. No Cabelas, Bass Pro, or Gander Mountain near me. An in Los Angeles County the laws are getting even more stringent. >:(

Maybe it is with the timing of the anniversary of 9/11. In any case, I'm going to order and LOAD UP on ammo online. Fortunately I do not live in The City of Los Angeles since I heard that there is now a law in place that makes in illegal to order handgun ammo online (rifle calibers are okay). The original law I believe was to ban all online ammo sales in The City of Los Angeles.

It's not a state law. City code maybe?

Yes, city. Hence why I wrote "The City of Los Angeles", not California. Fortunately I'm not in the city, just only the county.

Hi everyone,

I'm new, and it is sad to hear that someone can't get ammo! I've found some pretty reliable sources for online ammo, and the Wal-Marts here never run out...maybe that is because it is Washington. If anyone would like some of the links I use to order, let me know and I'd be happy to give them to you.

Hey guys,a few good guesses about ammo shortages but you overlook the obvious...there is a war going on and before we leave Iraq we will have to replace the millions of rounds of ammo we blew up when we first got there. That's right campers your hard earned tax dollars are going to buy new ammo to replace the ammo we siezed and destroyed .
We are re-arming the "new Iraqi " military at our expense and at the expense of the civilian arms market. There is very little 7.62 and 223 ammo on the spot market worldwide .Nine milimeter is in short supply..even bulk sellers like CTD are raising their prices and have pretty spotty availability.
What ammo there is is getting absurdly expensive...speculation on the metals markets have driven component parts prices up and all ammo travels by truck...gas prices...
All of these factors have combined to make for a lousy summer for shooters.

And therein lies the problem. :( Southern CA, no less.

Gotta love "The land of fruits and nuts". But I can't really talk...

Any chance you have a Big 5 nearby that sells ammo?

The most 9mm 100 round packs I've found at a Wal-Mart recently was 9 boxes.

Of course, I bought them ALL! ;D

stock up on more ammo than I am used to.

Powernoodle thinks thats very wise. Properly stored, it lasts for many decades, and its better to have too much than too little.

You guys think you got it bad, I live in the middle of a big ocean, and can't buy anything mail order because ammunition cannot be sent through the mail!*
So I'm pretty much stuck with whatever the 2 gun shops on this island might carry!*
Whenever I make a special order through them, it is sent from the factory to Los Angeles by UPS, then it is placed on a barge (no kidding, a barge!) and if I'm lucky, it arrives here 6 - 8 weeks later!*
God forbid there should ever be a major catastrophy, like Katrina, over here.

Close; but no cigar..
Actually, Hawaii, the state with some of the worst gun laws, second only to Kahlifornia.
