View Full Version : Kershaw Two Can review. Great little knife and scissors.

I have been on a quest to find the small tool that has at least a knife and scissors.* I have handled my share of Squirts and Mini SAKs, but in all honesty, even those where a bit bulky for my minimalist attitude.* I just need the basics for opening my mail and other packages.
Then there was the Kershaw Two Can.* I've seen it before.* No big deal.* I've heard that it was multi-functional as well.* Still, wasn't really interested.* Pictures can be deceiving though.
I received the A.G. Russell catalog in the mail the other day and was sifting through it.* I then read about the dimensions of this knife.* It is tiny 2 3/4 inches long closed including the clip, and weighs less than an ounce.* Even better was that I could get it for about $18 shipped on the Bay.

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i57/deathshead77/P8300004.jpg

I received it today and was quite impressed by the Two Can.* Very slender.* Even with the second blade, it is more slender than most of the skinniest knives.* Very cool design.* The quality wasn't top notch, but the quality exceeded what is expected from the price.* There is a thumbstud for one handed opening.* It is actually kinda small, so there is also a fingernail grove if you can't manage the thumbstud.* There is also another use for the thumbstud which I think is the main function of it, but I'll go over that later.* The first tiny blade came very sharp.* Not scary Spyderco sharp, but hair-popping sharp.* The second blade is only for the scissors function.* So it is the top of the blade that is sharpened.

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i57/deathshead77/P8300005.jpg

To close the knife when in scissors mode, the thumbstud pushes on the second blade, so pushing on the first blade closes the entire knife.* At first, I instictually tried to close the second blade first with my finger.* That is a no-no.* That what the thumbstud is for.* Very neat.

http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i57/deathshead77/P8300009.jpg

Now how does it cut?* Very well actually.* I cut up some of the packing material in came with quite easily.* But the scissors works in a unique way.* Not unlike those Japanese scissors where the blades are spring loaded and you pinch your thumb and index finger together.* It's not difficult to use.* I tried cutting paracord.* It was difficult to cut.* I would't recommend cutting paracord with small scissors anyways.* The Two Can cut through it though, but it took some effort on my part, and it cut it with a sudden snap from the pressure I was applying on the blades.

I give this knife a B+.

Advantages:* Very small and light.* Works well for very light jobs requiring cutting with a knife and/or scissors.* Price.
Disadvantages:* Clip may be small for some to disengage.* Clip could have been modified to be used as a bottle opener.

Super review DH. I've been eye balling this thing for some time but, well you know, it looks strange, and you're the first person I know to own one never mind review it. It's on the list now my friend.

Might I ask for another pic of it in the palm of your hand, fingers open, please

Sure, I can do that. I'm away from home at this time, but I'll do it as soon as I have access to my camera.

Thanks for the review DH,

I've been eye-balling those too for a while. I got to handle one recently at a local shop, but thier price was way to high...

I love the idea of the knife/scissors, but I hate the clip, seems like a waste of space. The knife could be so much smaller without it. If only Kershaw made a version of this with a side mounted pocket clip, I would be all over it.

Thanks again for the review,
Dan

A side mounted clip on this wouldn't work well.* The knife is too small for one.* I thought taking off the clip and making a sheath for it, but I decided to leave it on.* The clip could very easily be dremeled off without any problem.

Also, here's a pic of it in my hand as promised.

Wow,

That is a lot smaller than I remember (unless your hand is abnormally large).

You know that they say about large hands... That's right, big gloves ;)

I see your point about the pocket clip now. It's a bit too small for that.

Thanks,
Dan

I'm 5'9" and I am wearing a size 9 ring. That gives you an idea on how big this knife is. This thing is tiny. One of the reasons why I didn't make a sheath is because the sheath would be much larger than the ring that is on it already.

I too thank you DH...like bruner, I thought the Two Can was weird and large, but now I see it's neither... :-[

I use scissors probably more than any other EDC item (save a pen). Sigh...another thing gets added to the list. Above everything else, I like how thin it is.

I've got a Leatherman Micra, as well as a Squirt P4 and S4. While I like all of them, the Micra and S4 tend to be carried only for their scissors. Here's a great alternative - the Kershaw Two Can (http://www.kershawknives.com/productdetails.php?id=22):

The second blade has micro serrations, so it cuts very well. For scissors only, the Two Can wins hands down since it's about half as thick as the Micra/Squirt, about the same length and width (if the carabiner is ignored), and it cuts just as well, if not a bit better. Plus, the carabiner can be handy.

If you're left-handed, it may not suit you. When used left-handed, the blades tend to be separated slightly, so it won't cut as well. When used right-handed, though, the blades are held against each other and it cuts very easily.

I got mine from OneStopKnifeShop (http://www.1sks.com/store/product1.html) when they were on sale for $20.

Whoops - we already had a thread on the Two can - Kershaw Two Can review. Great little knife and scissors (http://edcforums.com/index.php?topic=3600.0).

Mods - feel free to merge these, if you want to.

codeman or anyone else that owns a twocan, can you confirm what the overall length is, including the carabiner? so end to end. thanks!

I pulled out my Kershaw and a ruler and here are my quick measurements:

Length including carabiner: 2 3/4"
Width: About 1/6"

It's about as long as, and a bit thinner than, my car key.
