Taking a look at EDC forum's frappr map: http://www.frappr.com/edcforums which, by the way, if you're not part of, I suggest joining, as it is very cool. I see we have a nice grouping of members from Southern California, does anyone want to meet up? The plan seems fairly loose to me at this point. All I want to do is meet up somewhere, look at other people's EDC stuff, eat some awesome food, swap EDC stories, mabey trade some things, and go home happy. Details as to where and when should be decided by consensus. I'm just getting the ball rolling here. Any suggestions?

Hey KeyGrip! Count me in! I'm in Huntington Beach. I work way too much, but as soon as we get some ideas for a time and place, I'll just make sure to schedule some time off!
Where's all the other SoCal edc'ers? We need ideas!

EDCF members (and their wacky friends) should take a look at the Frappr link in my sig line to get a good idea of where we all are. Some place in LA county seems manditory, perhaps along PCH? I don't travel there often enough to know any good meeting spots, so someone else will need to chime in.

Hmm, I've made a couple east coast CPF get-togethers, one in Phoenix recently, the last three CPF SoCal get-togethers, and the last three CPF SHOT show parties. (I left with door prizes from Surefire you wouldn't believe!) I don't EDC that much stuff, but count me in!

Well if this were USN I'd recommend a certain set of docks down in San Pedro :D...But since this is not, I will try to come up with somewhere equidistant to both those in northern LA and those of us down in the OC...now the question is where...

For the LA/OC area, somewhere around Long Beach would be pretty central, if we include SD area in the equation, it moves down to around Newport beach.

From the grouping on the map, it looks like somewhere in/around LA would be best, as it is equidistant from Santa Barbara (Myself and Namelessone) and San Diego (goretsky and Katsujinken). I'd like to see some more interest before we start deciding on the type of location (Park, restaraunt, metal shop, abandoned house, etc.) If any of you have friends who are not on the forum, but would be interested, tell them about it. I have at least one friend who's not on the forum that would like to go.

I just joined today but I think this is a good idea! I live in East LA county / North Orange county border. Long Beach or LA would be good for me, I would consider Anaheim, and Irvine too. I would suggest that we do it somewhere on PCH but finding parking kind of sucks over there. I don't know how LA is better but maybe there is a larger structure we can use at one of the malls/shopping center things?
At the moment I can't see where everyone is located.. Here at work flash 8 isn't installed :x

If everybody in the SoCal region knows where Costa Mesa is, there's a killer, and I mean absolutely freakin' amazing knife store there. Some of you may have been to Plaza Cutlery before, but for those who haven't, it's really wicked. The mall it's in has plenty of places for lunch. Check them both out online.

Yeah Plaza is awesome...talking to many I've heard it's one of the best knife shops on the west coast. Bonus is that it's freeway close, although it is a bit small to have a sizeable group hang out in. I'm trying to think where in that mall would be the best place for us to hang out/play with our edc gear without scaring the heards of ******* as they graze on Versace and Prada. :D

Excellent points. Based on the number of people posting in this thread, and it's activity, I'd say our group would be fairly small, but any group of people that just sits down at a table and starts whipping out knives, flashlights, prybars, grappling hooks, etc will draw attention. Offhand, I can't think of any place in the mall where we could all sit and chat. I may need to make another road trip down there for... research. :-X

It's sort of funny that honestly anywhere in the OC is pretty ******* rich. I'm just picturing even meeting at a local park...eventually someone would see a knife and wonder whats up. We should just head to the Surefire headquaters in Fountain Valley. Same exit as the Fry's electronics and guitar center (euclid). I bet with permission the surefire lot would be a "safe haven" for us. Anyone wanna talk to PK about that? haha...dreamin i know

How close is SF HQ to Costa Mesa. I know I'm sounding like a broken record, but this knife store is the tops. Add that to a visit with the SureFire crew, and I can die happy.

First off, thanks to those who are keeping this thread alive, it looked like it was flatlining there for a while. Now on to business. I'm going to send an e-mail to Plaza Cutlery asking if they have any advice or recommendations for this kind of event. Does anybody have any contacts with SureFire? I know we have some CPFers in the area. I envision the day being: Meet at SF HQ. That should be a fairly tool-friendly environment. Once we have a tour/get to know each other, everybody drives to the South Coast Plaza where we eat and visit Plaza Cutlery. This is a pretty rough idea, and any other are of course welcome. Let's make this happen.

Get-togethers are usually held on saturdays, and that could present a problem with Surefire, though it wouldn't surprise me if they were running 24/6 given current demand/backorders. I've never toured them, though I live 10 miles away and have an invite from the man. I'd like to have a good handle on the number of folks prior to dropping him an email.
Larry
KeyGrip
04-16-2007, 09:37 PM
Are they usually closed on Saturdays? Would their busy schedule prevent a tour? I suppose we should start rounding up people who are interested and decide on a time/place.
*Edit* Sent an email to Dan at Plaza Cutlery.
tvodrd
04-17-2007, 10:26 PM
I don't know if Surefire works saturdays, but suspect they might. A tour would require the concurrence of a high-up like pk, who's probably never heard of EDCF. I am reluctant to suggest a co-invite with CPF as the number of SoCal sign-ups would probably present some inconvenience to SF. While observing multi-axis CNC equipment in operation and assembly workers at their benches probably wouldn't risk any of their IP, it does have to be considered. I don't have a warm and fuzzy about this, but will drop him an email if we can establish a time range and approximate number of participants.

I tried to post in here last night but something screwed up (thanks for the fix Monica). Anyways what I was going to say was along the lines of what Larry said. IIRC, I figured we'd have what maybe 15 people max that would come down for a surefire tour? I then went on to say that involving CPF would really push that number over the top and change the reasoning for going there in the first place. Afterall, we do want to check out things OTHER than flashlights lol. :lolhammer:
KeyGrip
04-17-2007, 11:38 PM
So, maybe not a tour of the factory, but does SuerFire have a factory outlet? A flashlight-filled front office? If a SureFire tour proves impossible, Plaza Cutlery still boasts a decent SureFire selection. By the way, I'm still waiting for word back from Dan @ Plaza Cutlery.

Food for thought... I am sure most us will be carrying some, most or ALL or our EDC stuff... The location needs to be carefully thought out.... Don't want the owner/management freaking out when a bunch of guys come in and start pulling out knives, multi-tools and lights...
Maybe we can meet in a park and have a bbq????

Just an FYI and possibly a date and location...
Sept 12th is the opening day of Football Season... Browns v Bucs (I am a Bucs Fan)
I am going to be watching the game at Barney's Beanery (http://www.barneysbeanery.com/locations/westhollywood.php) with some friends. Game starts at 1:00
Just a suggestion... not trying to take over the meet...

Sklnxbones, we haven't coem up with a date yet because we were still coming up with a midway point to meet.
I agree with you on the whole knives-at-the-table debate. I had originally suggested a restaurant to meet at. I'm able to contact them and set something up so when/if the meet were to take place they could reserve tables to the rear and have prior notice of our presence.
I'm hesitant to do a park/bbq deal because of the cleanup/initial investment.
I was thinking of doing something mid december on a saturday or sunday. That way we can clear schedules, etc.
Besides, if only a couple of people show up at the first one hopefully it will motivate us to do it more often.

Oh man sorry about that. I meant SEPTEMBER! Not December! My bad...
IMHO Barney's would be less conducive to a meet and greet since the game will be on and people might be coming from OC and San B.
I suggested the barbecue place in Monrovia because it's quieter and it seemed like less of a hassle if people brought their stuff with them to show off. Also, it seemed like a mid point from the locations people have been calling out.
But I'll go with the majority.

if we set something up we should try to set i up for before Oct 4th. i start the academy on that date and pretty much wont be able to do anything for six months after that.
weekends are pretty much good for me. i think meeting at a park would also be a good idea, just in case anyone wants to bring any edc bag or show any knives or tactical looking tools. we could try to find a park with a bbq grill or pit so we could have a bbq.
if we could reserve some table at that bbq place that jabba mentioned i think that would work to. just get some tables in the back and let the owner know whats going on, i dont want to scare off any customers lol.

Given the over all lack of action on this topic... the following story is very relevant...
This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody, and Nobody.
There was an important job to be done, and Everybody was asked to do it.
Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it.
Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it.
Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job.
Everybody thought Somebody would do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody would not do it.
It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.
Well the 12th was my only weekend day off... If we try this again I will have to take time off of work... Let me know if you are serious about getting together sometime in the future. I will volunteer my house for a future meet and greet.

Amazingly, I am seeing this thread for the first time now. So first, I'm in! Second. I'm right by Santa Monica. There is a large park, Temescal Park, fairly secluded, $5 for parking, I think. There is a nice hike (~4 miles, but you can do more) that passes over a waterfall. The entrance is just off the beach at the Temescal / Sunset intersection. There are tons of great places to eat & drink in Santa Monica and Malibu. If any out-of-towners need a place to stay, I can offer my living room couch to one and floor space & a shower to anyone with a sleeping bag. I think this is a great idea. Plaza is a great store. They charge full retail, but their knowledge and in-stock selection makes it worth it. I got my Umnumzaan there. If we get a headcount, I bet we could swing a discount from them for our soirée. If we can get any kind of consensus, my schedule is very malleable.

If you guys are really coming on the 12th, let me know. The 13th is when DST begins, so we'll lose an hour out of Sunday, but that's fine. LET ME KNOW!

where are you at? if i can make it i can pick a few people up, i'm near the pasadena area.
19-20th sounds good to me as well. working on the house but if i can't make the hike i may still be down to come out for drinks later.
cosign on santa monica having great places to eat/drink. they have pretty much any type of popular food there.
now if we can only organize a texas hold em game on a regular basis. that would rock...

Ok, can we make a new thread for this so it's more clear what's going on? A sign up sheet, date, time, and location would be very welcome. Lists for recommended gear would be fun, but not required ;D

good idea on making a new thread, it would also be easier to see who wants to attend this gathering. i would suggest maybe tower starting the new thread. like the list for gear idea too, would make a good show and tell.

Off roading sounds great! I'll need to ride second chair/spotter for someone. The hummer needs a new frame & suspension so I'm figuring ~2 months Before I'm eating rocks again.
