View Full Version : Bay Area Get Together

If anyone in Northern CA wants to get together over lunch, dinner, or some other food eating ritual, post here so we know who's up for it.
Relevant concerns would be Place, Date, and Time.
Place:
I live in San Francisco, so that would be my choice. I'm willing to consider other options, especialy ones near BART stations as I do not have a car. That is unless someone is willing to give me a lift.
Date:
I work Mon-Thurs, 8am-5pm, Friday 8am-11pm
I'll also be out of town August 18th to the 30th.
Weekends are great for me - My vote would be Saturday lunch/brunch.
Time:
I'm not picky, but food is good, so mealtimes are usualy the most appropriate for social gatherings.
So. My vote would be Saturday, September 2, in San Francisco.
There are plenty of great places to eat. We could even BBQ in a park.
Anyone else? Other options?

Just noticed that Sept. 2nd is Labor Day Weekend. Could be too much going on for people. Sept. 9 just as good for me.

I'd be interested in a get-together sometime. Finding the time, however, will be rough, since school starts in a few days and I have work as well. But if those who want to attend can come to a concensus, I'll do my darndest to get there!

I'm in Marin, and September 9 could work for me.

Maybe if I ask REAL nice, my boss will give me the 9th off...
I think I can hop a Bay Area Transit bus that'll get me to the city within a matter of hours. Shall we discuss potential venues for this little shindig?

Yes! I would like to hear if anyone has ideas as to where we could have this. There are lots of good/cheap restraunts in downtown SF. There's a great Indian/Pakistani place that I'm partial to. Also Thai and Vietnamees. I'd say it would be good to keep to hole-in-the-wall places if we go that rought so we don't scare any normal types. But I'd like to know if there's anywhere else that people think would be good. If it would be easier for others to meet in the North, South, or East Bay, please let us know.

Oh, man! You said the magic WORD! For Thai food I think it doesn't matter whether or not my boss gives me the day off! I just hope these "hole-in-the-wall" joints you mention will fall somewhere in-between the "OMG, those guys are comparing KNIVES at that table" type and the "Hey, those guys are drawing knives...they must want to fight" type. I'm not looking to get into any standoffs of ANY ethnicity, be they Mexican, Thai, Pakistani or Mandalorian...I do NOT discriminate!* ;D
Seriously, if it is to be Thai, then I am to be expected!* :highfive:

Just found out that I have a wedding to go to on the 9th. Another date would be good. The 10th maybe, or the weekend after- the 16th or 17th

The plot thickens!
Don't worry, we'll figure something out. When you know for sure what day is good, let me know. Oh, and let's try to find some more people from NorCal here on EDCF. I know they're out there! So far we've got, like, what? Three? Three's a crowd, but not a big enough one, IMHO. The more the merrier!

Okay, time to breath some more life back into this little endeavor! C'mon, people! Let's try and make a little headway here!* :knuppel2:
I'm in near Los Gatos, so if we do it near the city, it would have to be weekends for me. Other than that, I'm good for any place as long as their is parking available - I'l be in a 1 ton Silverado dually with a crew cab unless I can get my car running by the time we meet. It's a little hard for me to get around downtown San Francisco in a rig that size.
BTW, I prefer lunch also.

Great! looks like we've got the ball rolling with a few more people! Sorry I've been offline the past few weeks.
I'll be in NOLA October 2nd - 21st, so before that would be preferable to me.
How about Saturday the 30th? Lunch at a little Thia place in downtown San Francisco, then a field trip over to TAD Gear? Shoot, if everything else falls through, I might just do that myself anyway.
I don't know if people could carpool, but it looks like a few people are on the same roughts.
Otherwise we could meet in the Eastbay somewhere, although I'm not very familiar with what's out there. There would be more parking and save most everyone some gas and bridge toll money.

What's your fancy? Lights? Cars? Gadgets?
For me, it's cars and lights. Also heavily into metal detecting...

Okay, kinzli, here's a second chance for you. There is going to be another CPF get together the evening of Nov, 18. It's not posted yet, but mark your calendar.
We checked the almanac, and there should be some real quality "dark" that night. If you like lights, everything from keychain lights to the really big guns, this will be the place to be.

Cool, that one I can make.
I'll bring a Mag85, and possibly a 4000+ lumen maglight :D
I'll also bring a whole bunch of Luxeon based lights of different sorts...
Depending on where it is, I may or may not be able to bring my car >:D

That wouldn't be a USL would it? ;D
The get together will probably be in San Bruno. That way we accomodate people from all over the Bay Area and from places as far away as Lake, County in the north and Monterey in the South.

Not a USL, but ccmaciel's "Torch". Similar to the USL, and capable of lighting paper on fire. Don't have it yet, hope to have it soon though (I'm on the list and waiting).
Regardless, San Bruno is too far away to bring the car, so it'll have to be just lights and gadgets, but I'll plan on attending.

Looking forward to seeing how the Torch compares with a USL. If I were you, I'd bring the car - it's an awefully long walk from Santa Cruz. ;D

The car gets ~2mpg and is extremely loud and rough for anything more than a 10 mile journey. Add to that a 20 gallon fuel cell, and I'd be destroyed by the time I got there :)

Nice rig. You could up that milage to about 15 mpg if you did what I do with my Jeep - put in on an 18 ft trailer and tow it behind a 1 ton diesel dually. ;D

I'm going to be working tomorrow (Saturday).
JimH - I didn't see anything about San Bruno in the CPF get together thread. I'm a little confused... but San Bruno would be easy enough for me if my scheduel allowed.

Jim, you've been too busy with that new home improvment project (Costco Cabinet). Patrick posted it almost a month ago.
Here it is the San Bruno Get-Together (http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=138124).
Just hope we don't stay until 2AM again. His GF will kick us out and never invite us back. :lolhammer:

I just posted on CPF for the November 18th gathering (as MrBager). As I said there it's maybe 80% for me to be there. I just moved yesterday out of San Francisco up to Napa, so I'm still settling in.
Besides some of my lights, I'll see what else I can dig up EDC-wise to bring.

Had I thought of it I would have posted an invite to that event here on EDCF. Sorry folks for not thinking of it.
Sometime around May I will try to host Flashapalooza II at Grant Ranch County Park. Last year was a great success with plenty of food, friends, and flashlights. I was able to get campsites for those that drove in from a distance, and can do the same again this year for those that want the option.
I also organize night hikes in the Bay Area (thread on CPF) if anyone is interested. Lately with the weather we haven't gone out; that and my knee is slow to heal from injuring it on that last hike.
Another event I want to repeat is the CPF camping trip we had in March at Big Basin Redwoods State Park. We may use the same park or try Henry Cowell this year. Also we may wait until April this year so it's a little warmer.
Yet another possibility for those in the So. California area; there is a feeler thread on CPF for those interested in a get-together. So far nobody has offered to host it, but I may just do so if there are enough folks who are in range of Griffith Park in Los Angeles.

I didn't go to that one because I had the impression that it was only for modders.
... plenty of food, friends, and flashlights.
Don't forget the more than plenty bugs - so many in fact that visability was limited. Although the bugs were an anoyance, they were not the biting type and did not take away from the fun of the event.

As I recall Jim most of the bugs were the result of your picnic lights. I happen to have a short video clip here (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v249/LowBat/?action=view¤t=06-17-06_21033gp.flv).
