My son is here on leave before he goes back for another trip to Iraq. I got him his own Beretta M9, which is his issue weapon (edc) in the army, to have when he retires. We went to the range today so he could get in a little extra practice. Strangely, the M9 has different sights from the various civilian versions of the model 92 in that the rear sight just has a half moon on the bottom and the others have 2 dots on the ears. I have other Beretta's but am not familiar with the 92. This seems to me to be a lesser sight. Any Beretta people out there who can explain this? BTW, the sight is dimpled for the other 2 dots and I added them in. I just can't understand why the army would not do this.

Just to clarify, what you bought for him was a 92FS, right? I used to have one of those. Sold it to buy my HK.

Right, but the FS has the 2 dots and the M9, which is the military issue (all branches) has the half moon. Otherwise everthing is exactly the same.

I had two 92FS', one Italian made and the other Barretta USA made.
US version had the two dots, Itl. had the half moon.
The half moon also seems typical of Euro pieces.

Strange the army would pick the euro version. Maybe NATO influence. Which did you like best? Never fired one before today as I was issued a 1911 in 1965.

I have a 1/2 moon and I prefer it to the dots. Much quicker for me to line up a shot.

My current EDC Italian 92FS has dot sights...ten years ago I had an American 92FS and it had dot sights. Most people here prefer the Italian version. I strangely feel the American one is better, for my previous one had a better trigger pull in double action, but barely.
I took a felt pen and blackened out the two rear dots. Now It's perfect for me.
The only thing you can love about the Beretta is It's utter reliability with any ammo. As long as it fits in the chamber, a spent case is going out.

This may throw a curve and I cannot verify it because I too sold it to buy an HK. But I had an American made 92 FS with the half moon rear. It was one of the most reliable guns I have ever shot.
