Help me out on this one. I currently live in the People's Republic of Mass., but I should have no problem getting a CCW in my town. My current dilemma is that after I get out of school, my job may very well take me to California. I've heard it's difficult to impossible to get a CCW. Is there any hope for me? I don't yet have my CCW here in MA, but I'm planning to pursue it. I just don't want to jump through all those hoops just to find out that when I move I'll have to give up my guns. I heard rumor that unless you're a celebrity or judge, there's no way you're getting your CCW in Cal. >:(

Even though a CCW is valid statewide, issuing a CCW here are controlled by the counties. Trying to get one if you live in Marin (San Francisco), San Diego, Orange (Disneyland) or Los Angeles counties is hopeless. There are some rural areas where getting a CCW is not a problem but you have to live in those counties.

Here's some info for ya. While not the word of law, this is from www.packing.org Lots of good info there. And from what I understand you can get it in certain counties, but it's a long and somewhat expensive process...just have to jump thru all their hoops.

kamakazmoto sums it up, samson722. A "standard issue" individual getting a CCW in any major city/county is like pulling teeth from a brass monkey. Many times, the CCW statute says that the Chief of Police of the issuing department must personally vouch for the recipeint. Thats where the celebrity/elitist power trip comes into play. Culver City, a small town in west L.A.county, used to give these things out to celebs' frequently. Thats how Robert Blake got his. In fact, Culver City law says that the CCW permit holder must live in the city of issue; Robert Blakes address is miles away,so someone did some snooping, and found out that Mr. Blake rented an empty appartment, right down the street from the police station, in fact, so he could qualify. All I can say samson722, is good luck.

I had a CCW in Placer county for years. My father has also had one in Butte county for ages.
The map posted from packing.org seems pretty accurate from my experience though- Sacramento county makes it just about impossible- and you have a better chance of marrying the Pope than getting a CCW in San Francisco.

On a side-note- The city of Isleton in Sacramento County was routinely issuing CCW's for a decent fee until some DA's office found out about it and filed a suit. The city charged a decently hefty fee (worth it IMHO) and were issuing them to anyone who applied and qualified. As is typical, someone laid the smackdown on them and they stopped doing it.

If you are coming to the Bay Area you will most likely not be able to get a CCW unless you are HOOKED UP politically. If you have a job related reason then you may be able to get one. But if you just want to be a citizen who is able to carry; ain't gonna happen. Check out www.calguns.org and you may second guess coming to the PRK.

VWTim, that is a great map but Orange county is harder than 'll to get a CCW. It should NOT be green

I live in the L.A. area. It is only hear-say, but I almost moved to nearby Ventura County because I heard that I could get a CCW there. I ended up staying in the L.A. county area due to other factors.

I'm just posting what packing.org lists. Try shooting and E-mail off to them, maybe get it updated.
