After a couple weeks of switching jobs and moving apartments I've finally been able to post some pictures of the old and "new" County Comm screw links:

First, we have four of the old screw links:

Next, we have the same four old screw links on the left with two new screw links on the right:

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g22/heathhodges/sl_or_nl.jpg

Again, four old screw links on the left with two new on the right:

http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g22/heathhodges/sl_4or_2ol.jpg

Two new screw links:

Two new screw links:

Two new screw links open:

I realize it might be somewhat hard to tell from the photos but the newer screw links are a little better than their predecessors.

The newer links threads are lined up more evenly so they thread very well.* They also seem to have the threads made a little more evenly and a little finer than the old screw links.* I had a hard time aligning some of the old links and an even harder time threading them together.* The new ones are not like this.

The newer links also don't have as much play in them as the old ones.* By play, I mean, the amount of movement noticeable when pulling opposite ends of the link when it is threaded together.* The older version seemed to have a lot of play which would be noticeable when carrying heavy items.* Granted, these aren't designed to carry a large amount of weight but I wasn't expecting them to have as much play as they do.* The newer version seemed to have corrected this somewhat as the play is a little less than the older version but is still present.

I had heard that County Comm used thicker Ti on these newer versions but they seem the same size as the older versions to me.* Some of the older versions that I have even contain noticeable differences such as thread length, overall length, and shape.* The two newer versions that I have seem to be more uniformly made with less differences than the four older versions I have.* With that said, the new links show promise but could obviously be improved even more.* However, they do offer some improvement over the older version.* A picture is worth a thousand words but having the product in your hand is even better.* So, if you're looking for a good quality screw link in Ti at a good price these will probably fit your bill.* But, if you're looking for a perfect solution for a small, strong screw link then I'd wait until the third or even fourth revision of this product so the remaining problems can be worked out.

More to come as I use these in the upcoming weeks...

Can you re-size the images down to say 640x480 or so?

Also, are the threads on both ends of the link, or just the top end?

I go with your advice and wait for more stable screw links. I would rather have sturdy steel ones than shody titanium ones.

H3,

What do you use these links for?

I have 4 arriving today and they are gonna get an instant field test.

I'm going to use the new ones for a key ring I think or perhaps a knife lanyard.* I'm not entirely sure, actually.* But, they're made of titanium!* I had to have a couple.* :)

I'll try to get some scaled-down images.* Sorry for those of you whose monitor freaked out.* *;D

And as far as I can tell, the thread are on only one side: the widest side, as seen in the last picture.

EDIT: Ok, images have been scaled down a bit. If this is still too large, let me know.

Just right on the re-sizing, sir!* Thank you.

Thanks also for the thread clarification.* I hope one of the next versions are threaded on both ends.* That would really help.

I've found these to be handy for attaching things to zipper pulls.

EDIT: Ok, images have been scaled down a bit. If this is still too large, let me know.I'm still only seeing half the pic and have to scroll right to see the rest. If you cropped them and/or resized them to about 640x480, that would fit almost everybody's screens. Thanks.

I'm still on the fence about these, it sounds like it's still a work in progress. I'm curious to see what your long-term assessment is.

Ok, down another notch. Lemme know if this is still too large. :)

(I know there was another thread or two on these that I read before buying them, but I can't find it (them), so I'll post here)

I just got a couple of these, and I like them very much.

They seem pretty solid. Lightweight, well-manufactured, and very functional. I had read something about the threads being a concern. On the samples I got, they seem to be very smooth and easy to operate.

They're smaller that I had expected. I had seen the size posted, but it's hard to visualize. The one I got for my keychain will work exacty as I had hoped it would. I'm still looking for a use for the other one which I only got so I wouldn't have to pay double shipping if I wanted another one.

Which brings me to the high shipping costs. Shipping was $7. Most places shipping is from $3-$5 so it wasn't outrageous, but considering the screw links themselves only cost $3.00, it seems a bit steep. Luckily, I was wanting something else from them anyway, so with a couple of items it evened out.

I don't know that I'd pay $10 for one, though that's not a bad price for a titanium keyring, but for $3.00 added to something else from CountyComm, these are a steal.

Group buy?

The older ones I had would screw too far and leave a gap at the bottom of the screw link toward the narrow end. Have they fixed that?

Must have.

When I screw it down all the way, looking in with a flashlight, it looks like there's 2-3mm at least still in the screw thingy.

I've been using one for months to attach my wallet to a belt loop using a titanium chain. So far not a single problem, they are also good to attach one to a belt loop and then use berkeley point clips to attach items to the ti-link. A modular attachment point for EDC items on your side!

Thanks for posting the link and for the info. I received one of these when purchasing an Arc AAA-P on CPF awhile back, and had no idea where it came from. I put two of GreenLED's smallest glow o-rings on the grooves of the screw mechanism. They fit very snugly and provide additional grip. Mine has worked very well so far. :)
