View Full Version : Dad is sick...meningitis

I have not had the time to be out here as much as I had hoped to have. It looks like for awhile I might have even less.
My Dad has meningitis and has been unresponsive and running a 105 degree temperature. I will be out here even less for a little while.

It looks like I am about to have a huge change in life. It appears that he will need 24 hour care. I will soon become a hermit and try and take care of him. This means that all my work will have to be out of the house so now I have to be able to make my business fly since working outside of the home will soon not be an option for me.

I hope you can spend as much time with him as you can. I lost my father to Parkinson's last year, and I value the time we spent over those last few months a great deal, even though it wasn't the best of times.

They have moved him to another hospital. These people are giving me more information.
Here is what I know.
The bacteria is Listeria. He was found on passed out on the floor and no one knows how long he had been there. He was taken to a hospital on 6-18. For several days he temperature was over 105f. The MRI from the 23rd shows a lesion in the right occipital lobe.
The curious thing is that two nurses asked where he got his milk at.
It seems like one thing after another keeps coming up that is stopping me from being active in my own forum. I will one day be an active member.

Thanks for the update Jon!
It is cool you started something that can run like a well oiled machine while you are away.
Did you mention what type of meningitis he has? bacterial, viral ...
My dad had the bacterial type and had to have a spinal tap.
I wish for a recovery!
there are many here for you anytime you need them so do what you have to do.

Copykat, Listeria is a bacteria transmitted via contaminated food from what I can remember. Usually it infects people with supressed immune systems.

No need to worry about us; we will be here if you need us.

Jon, I am still praying for you and yours. If there is anything I can do let me know. I'm not hard to get a hold of.
Give me a call or PM here or CPF. I wish I could do more but prayer is a powerful thing and a times the only thing we
can do.

The hospital called me this morning.* They wanted consent for a feeding tube to be placed which I agreed to.* I told them I thought he already had one installed.* They told me this one was more permanent than the one he has now.* They told me that he could get better but they think it is not likely.
I actually thought he was improving, he went from seeming lifeless to speaking.* While he was speaking he was lost in time, he thought he was needing to teach a military class that he thought in the 60s.* At lest he was not having the image of being in Asia in his head. I guess I was wrong by the fact that he is now speaking that he is getting better.
I am not sure what my options are going to be but I am going to try and take care of him when and if they release him.

Tough decisions ahead. When we put my father into a nursing home, it broke my heart. That was the last thing he, or us, wanted. It broke his will. But his condition left us with no alternative. Mercifully, he didn't last long after that. I don't feel guilty for the decision we made as a family, but it was the hardest decision I've ever made and it was the biggest one in my life that I wish could have been made differently. We simply couldn't. We lost him a year ago yesterday.
Point is, whatever decisions you have to make, you'll have to live with. Down the road, all the little things that might seem to weigh into your decisions, won't be important at all. Doing right by your Dad, though will be. Like I said, I don't feel guilty about the decision we made, but I will always know that I was partially responsible for breaking his will. Knowing that I did everything I could is the biggest reason I'm at peace. Maybe, it's the only reason.
