ATLANTA - A former Marine used a pocket knife to fend off a group of would-be robbers, killing one and wounding another, police said.

Thomas Autry, who authorities said will not be charged, had been walking home from his job waiting tables Monday night when four people got out of a car and chased him, Atlanta police detective Danny Stephens said.

One of the attackers had a shotgun and another had a pistol, Stephens said.

The suspects caught up with Autry, who yelled for help and pulled a knife out of his backpack. He kicked the shotgun out of one of the attacker's hands and stabbed both a 17-year-old girl who jumped on him and a man who also attacked him.

The suspects fled in their car but police found them later at a hospital where the girl was pronounced dead. The man stabbed in the incident was in critical condition, Stephens said.

Autry's attackers will face robbery and aggravated assault charges and are suspected in other robberies over the past week, Stephen said.

Stephens credited Autry's military training with helping him fend off the group.

"I would say he had to do what he had to do to stop the threat," Stephens said. "You can tell his training kicked in and he knew what to do."

Autry, 36, suffered a cut to his hand and a bruise on his chest, Stephens said.

Good for him! It's unfortunate someone had to lose their life though.

Better someone else loses their life than the potential victim. He did the right thing. First lesson in self-defense. Run away as fast as you if possible.

Big kudos to the APD for not only getting it right, but describing his actions correctly.

My heart goes out to Mr. Autry.* He has to learn to live with his actions.* Taking a life, even when all you're trying to do is to stop a threat, and you're justified in doing so, has to weigh on a person.* He's in a place that I hope I never find myself. But, if it happens to me, I'd rather be in his shoes than a coffin.

As the son of a career Marine, I must say that they can be some of the best (yet scariest) folks to be around when things go crazy. I salute Autry's courage, and am saddened that an innocent life has been lost to stupidity (the mother's stupidity).

The mother of the crook is mad at the marine...that's REALLY funny! :lolhammer:

Yeah, it's all the marine's fault her kid's a sociopath. :-X

Ah well, the second rule of thumb is that predators act the way the do because they expect people to react a certain way (i.e., comply!). When people don't comply, that's when it's anyone's game. And the marine realized that and saved his skin. Rightfully, totally justifiably so.

I heard him intervied and he was saddend by having to kill her. I am glad that he is safe and that he survived. I am not sure how I would feel, but he seems like a good guy.

I am always glad to hear about people defending themselves. It is sad that a young girl was killed. But maybe she shouldnt be hanging out with criminals with shotguns that attack and rob people.

<vent mode>It's real wierd to me, and I have difficulty understanding how criminals and their families are talking about their rights, it seems to me that when you engage in a crime, especially a confortational or violent crime, like armed robbery or breaking into someones house to rob them, I would think that at that time you are making a choice, with certain consequences, relieving yourself of certain rights. Apparently I am wrong. BTW, I live in NJ, I don't think it's ever ok in the eyes of the law here to defend yourself. I haven't exhaustively researched it yet, so I'm not sure, but the laws protect the criminals, not the victims.</vent mode>

I'm sorry, I had to vent. Thanks for listening.

It's sad somebody had to die, but better the bad guy than the good guy.
