I'm still working on them. Slight design change actually, so we'll see how they turn out.

Yeah, I don't know about those earlier damascus Prybabies...weren't they all pretty much normal size? Maybe a touch smaller. Yeah, OK, I think Doug's is the only one that was a Mini size. You'll have to forgive me but there've been a lot of these things.... ;D :idiot2:

Peter,

That prototype Prybaby (Teenybaby?) looks fantastic. I love the brushed steel finish. What steel is that?? I hope they'll all look like that --* it just seems to work on the keyring in that manner.

EDIT> Then again, if it's going to be available in damascus maybe I'll wait a bit 8) ;) :) ;D

Peter Atwood
05-11-2006, 07:34 AM
Sunnie, the minis will be a little different than the 3V one John has. I oversized the lanyard hole and moved it forward a bit in order to maintain the strength of the screwdriver tip. This also makes it easier to put a keyring through and it lessens the weight. You wouldn't think it would need to weigh less but I made these out of thicker stock than the regular prybabies if you can believe it. :) 3/16" S30v instead of the usual 5/32. They are quite chunky. ;D Will be bead blasted finish.

I checked out your website and there was a huge list of things to use it for. #18: squishing ticks to death is what sold me on it. I live in a big city so never encounter ticks, but I think that is because they are all in hiding, waiting for their chance to get me. As soon as I get the Mini Prybaby, ticks will know and fear me.

As soon as I get it, I'll let you know how much I like it. (and I may have to buy more of your stuff too!)

Pipedreams is correct... It doesn't look too much smaller in a photo, but on your keychain it makes a big difference! If your not carrying it on your keychain, then go with a standard. I too use it to scratch lotto tickets and I have about as much luck as Pipedreams does! ;D

Thanks Peter. I liked your lanyard (especially the knot, that was a new one to me* O0), but it still felt a little small in my hand. I just used a standard scaffold knot with about 9 or 10 turns, and found it fills my hand up nicely. Now I feel like the mini fills my whole hand.

I love this thing more and more everyday. :smitten: You came up with a great item here Peter. Now you have hurry up and make yourself some more!!

Peter Atwood
05-26-2006, 01:14 PM
Wish I had time to do fancier lanyards but it's just not practical. I'm grateful to my buddy Brian for showing me the two strand Matthew Walker knot as it dresses up a plain lanyard a bit.

Bruiser
05-26-2006, 02:50 PM
I used that 2 strand knot you did on your lanyards, and put them on all my paracord zipper pulls. They work great! I was using figure 8 stopper knots and small heaving knots on the ends before. The one you supply is much better for that. :king:

Go with a mini first. I think it is the best item that Peter has right now. It really depends on if your going to use it EDC or not? If you are looking for a collectible, then go for the Keyton. I use the mini on my keys and it is the perfect size for my everyday needs. What you really need is a Ti-Mini!! Come on Peter, please. ;D

Ti is harder to come by in the thick sheets lately. I'll look into it but I have a feeling if I do get around to these it will be in a thinner stock.

Sunnie
06-05-2006, 11:17 AM
If the full-size basic prybaby is anything to go by, a titanium mini-prybaby would definitely be the ultimate key chain tool. Exceptionally useful, strong, perfect size AND LIGHT :smitten: :smitten:. I'm going to wait and hope that this combination does become available.

By the way: an update one month on. Apart from my small pocket knife, the prybaby is the tool that I use more often than any other. The fact that it's one-piece (ie no fiddly bits to unfold), strong and dependable (ie not a toy or gimmick) and has all the most often basic regularly used basic functions makes it an excellent item. This item seems to get talked about more than any other on this forum, and there is good reason for that. :)

I'll take any Ti Mini that Peter will make. I think he knows we all want one, maybe he just doesn't want to get bombarded until he has a full chance to get caught up. It is on the top of my want list for sure...

IMO, Area 51 Prybabies are the coolest looking Atwood tools made.

This is what the Mini Ti Spannerbabies would look like (but smaller and a bigger hole):

Ok! I'm convinced, I need one!
Unfortunately I don't have the money, so it looks like I'll be making one :o (No, I do not expect to come near 1/10 the quality, but hopefully most of the functionality)

Now, on the prying end, the V notch is on the angled side. This looks nice, but wouldn't it make more sense for the V to be carved into the flat side? This would essentially give a fulcrum (the corner of the other side) and add leverage for pulling up nails or whatnot.....

Oh so many thoughts....

Mini Prybabies rule! That is all....

Ti is cool stuff, but I love S30v, has a nice smell and look to the steel.
The Ti Guild wants to have me erased now... no... I do like Ti... I just don't have any yet... please don't kill me... :yikes:

Solstice
07-14-2006, 12:31 AM
IMHO, a Ti is a much more appropriate material for a keychain tool due to it's excellent strength/weight ratio and corrosion resistance. While S30V is formulated to hold an edge, I don't see the point in using it for a prying/bottle popping tool. With the steel, it will be heavier, susceptable to rust (which by many accounts does occur fairly often with this steel) and because of the extreme hardness has the possiblilty of chipping (which I could see happening with a pry tool).

Alright, I'll admit it, the TiG has me assimilated ;). Resistance is futile. I'm sure the steel tools are beauties, but for the above reasons I really do think Ti makes sense. If were to go with a steel version, I'd rather have something a bit springier, more corrosion resistant and less expensive. Just because S30V is the "it" steel for knives at the moment doesn't mean it needs to be used to build a toaster, etc.

Deaths Head
07-14-2006, 05:07 AM
Just a small fact though for all you Ti lovers out there like myself. Pound for pound, titanium is about twice as strong as steel. But did you know for the same volume of space that both materials take up steel is stronger? Just a little bit of trivia.

Solstice
07-14-2006, 01:01 PM
Yeah, two identical form-factor items made from Ti or steel, the steel will be stronger, however the Ti will be almost as strong and FAR lighter. Depends on an individual's needs, but I like my EDC items to be as light as possible- that way I can carry more of them ;).

Gadget Guy
07-14-2006, 01:11 PM

Ti scratches very easily. When I get a Ti one, I will opt for a plain finish because a few rubs with a Scotch Brite can polish of all the light scuffs.

Go the the thread and make a post and I'll let you in. Basically pick a number between 1-100 that is still available. You will see the list on the first post of the thread. Look up "Titaniacs Guild". Also, don't forget to buy a T-shirt. We need at least 50 pieces to be bought and we are only up to 30.
