How did you decide on your screen name?

As a kid, I always had some great idea brewing. You know, the kid with the wild imagination. My Grandama said that I was a "pipe dreamer."

Long story short: my brother was going on about how glow worms are lucky in China (who knows if they are?) and then he turned to me and said, "But your're not lucky...you're lower than glow worm...you're Low Worm!"

Sounds dumb now, but it made me laugh then. :uglystupid2:

I decided to use LowWorm when first joining CPF, mainly because I thought I'd just lurk for a while and never visit that forum again once I got what I needed...

:lurk:

Who knew?

Thought I'd keep it here to keep things simple.

Stuart (Stu to my friends!) is my first name, and my surname is Thornton. One of the more popular & famous confectioners here in the UK is "Thorntons", and they're probably most famous for their Special Toffee. A teacher at school christened me "Toffee", it wound up being my nickname at school. Later in life, when I worked at a large department store staffed by lots of lovely ladies, and where most of the OTHER guys were gay, I was nicknamed "Stu Hefner", as I did tend to wander off chatting to the gals quite alot! LOL ;D

Sadly, Im no relation to the (Extremely wealthy!) Thorntons confectioners family, coz, well.. if I was, I wouldnt be talking to the likes of you lot, would I? ;)

Long ago I was a philosophy major. We were studying Nietzsche in one class, and I was watching Underdog in the mornings before classes started. I had this idea to ask one of my German-speaking classmates to translate the name, in a sort of reaction to the concept of the ubermensch. And I liked it so much that I've kept using it all these years.

(It appears Serigrapher83 is the same age I am, within a few months.)

05-03-2006, 04:21 AM
Well back in high school, my best friend and I were always going to take over the world. Not so much to do anything important, but moreso just to prove it could be done. Anywho, somewhere along the way I became the "brains" of the operation and he became the social face of it. One day he gave me a buzz on the phone and aksed what The Great Mahachippy thought about this and that. From then on he called me Mahachippy....I suppose he thought that the Maha added a sense of title to my name Chip. Why he used Chippy...I dunno, but he did. Ever since I have used Mahachippy on everything I do that requires me to create a username. So anywho, that is all!

The Great Mahachippy has spoken!

I suppose I'm what you would call quasi-ambidexterous. Power functions (swinging a bat or a golf club, flipping people off angrily, opening tightly sealed jars for my wife) are done with the right hand, while finesse functions (drawing, flipping a quarter for those crucial life decisions, giving people the finger with a certian panache) are done with the left.

Also, I am a writer, both by passion and vocation.

A lefthanded writer, to be specific.

Nightwatch
05-10-2006, 12:29 PM
About a year and a half ago The Valdosta State University Police Department decided to take a risk and give me a job as Student Security Patrol Supervisor (and not only that but starting the program from almost scratch). I had just moved to the area, had no previous experience in security, law enforcement, or managing (I had been a circulation Librarian for 8 years), but the Chief liked me, and I jumped right in. Thus I began my job as part of VSU's Nightwatch

The Student Security Patrol (The SSPs) are an auxillary to the uniformed officers. They patrol the parking lots, secure buildings, escort students and faculty, observe and report unusual or suspicious behavior (inebriated young ladies swimming in the fountain infront of the main hall for instance) and lately seem to have a nack for injuring themselves while on duty (but under a different supervisor). The hours for our patrol are 6PM to 2AM in most weather, which fit me well as I have always been more of a night person and my wife, at the time worked the night shift for the Sherrif's office.

Though the job demanded long hours (much of it on my feet), and did not pay all that well, it was one of the most interesting jobs I have ever had.

Some of what I learned

Managing College students makes herding cats look easy.

It rains alot in South Georgia in the Spring/Summer. I gave up on trying to stay dry as it is also very warm and humid in South Georgia during the rainy season and most rain gear quickly brings on Heat Stroke. The sollution was quick drying BDUs, a good rain hat, a ziploc bag for the cell phone, and an attitude that getting wet is not all that bad (as long as my glasses stayed dry)

When walking 8-10 miles a night, good boots are a neccessity. I swear by Bates Ultra-lights series now.

People respect really bright flashlights, but they respect really long maglights even more (even though they may not be as bright).

I no longer manage the SSPs, as I moved on up the ladder and became a Communications Officer in October, I work the same shift, so I am still part of VSU's nightwatch, I just get to do it inside an airconditioned office :D .

I drive a silver VW Beetle and my father used to joke that he read on the internet that the reason it is so space-efficient is because it was reverse engineered from the spaceships that crashed in New Mexico. Green Lantern was my favorite superhero when I was a kid (I've always like green - there's a story to that as well). When I joined CPF, I decided that the name of a light-emitting superhero would be appropriate. Given the advances in technology, though,I thought GL must've certainly upgraded his powers to LED technology (after all, they're more energy efficient than a lantern, right?). I actually have an avatar showing Green Lantern with a LED symbol on his "uniform" - I should update it one of these days.

KeyGrip
05-21-2006, 11:18 PM
In the Theatre (that's RE not ER), the Key Grip is the backstage eye/ear/mouth/hand of the Stage Manager. The stage manager sends commands and general information via headset to the Key Grip, who relates said commands and information to his/her Grips; the monkeys who move crap around and yell at actors. I have been a Key Grip once, and I liked the name so much that I used it here. My Blade Forums handle is USSR, which stands for UpStage Stage Right, the Grip position I held for my first musical, Les Miserables. The similarity to the United Soviet Socialist Republics is not coincidence, as I enjoy a certain amount of irreverence and provocation, but am not a communist.

Empath
05-28-2006, 02:14 AM
I tried to offer an explanation in a similar thread on CPF. Though it would be nice to explain it anew for EDC, it will save me some time and writing if I may just repeat here.

At one time long ago, I was puppet-master to a puppet named EMPATH. A more obnoxious, and disagreeable puppet would be hard to find. His name was spelled with all caps, to a great extent because it was more in your face and irritating that way. Pity the man that showed poor judgment by ignoring the proper protocol of all caps. But, as happens between master and puppet, the lines between the two became entangled, and it slowly became more difficult to tell which was master and which was puppet. The puppet used a nick given to his master by acquaintances and friends. But he abused the name no end, turning it into a means of verbal jousts and battles of wit.

One day EMPATH, the puppet, presented to the puppet master a most interesting concept which he had picked up from one of his ventures. It was a set of "dos and don'ts" that were not rules. Or, it could be called rules without the "dos and don'ts". Basically a philosophy of three efforts.

(1) Try not to identify
(2) Try not to be negative
(3) Inner consideration never; external consideration always. (Lotsa' try involved with that)

This of course created a dilemma, since EMPATH was but a puppet that was terribly confused as to whether he was puppet or master, and a puppet master terribly entangled with the activity of his puppet. The source of the new philosophy held promise of being a "pearl of great value". A "pearl of great value" doesn't come without sacrifice. At times it's necessary to sell all you own in order to acquire it. To complicate matters, EMPATH the puppet had picked up a follower that recognized that a puppet meant more was involved that just the action of the puppet. An obligation had developed, wanted or not, and the follower was not going to turn loose nor shift their attention to any other matter. So, with follower close behind, Empath, the puppet master, sold all he had, figuratively wrapping the strings around EMPATH the puppet and placing him securely in his box. EMPATH had gotten his wishes and had become one with Empath the puppet master. Together they headed out to sit at the feet of some wise ones that had been granted a certain period of time for a purposeful school. The source of the "pearl" proved to be a very worthwhile resource tool.

There are obligations and responsibilities of EMPATH and Empath, some negative and some positive. To use another name would not be shouldering those responsibilities and obligations. Continuing it's use permits continuity.

There is Irish Gaelic and Scottish Gaelic and another, Manx. *There are also different dialects of Irish Gaelic, and Irish Gaelic is considered the parent language of Scottish Gaelic and Manx.

So, yes. Scottish is Gaelic. *I am trying to learn Irish Gaelic, and no, thanks, I'll pass on the haggis, as I know what is in that stuff--or rather, what it is cooked in. :P

Mine is actually a bad story...

I just had my Mtech033 and I began trying it out by cutting some stuff. Well I eventually tried cutting up a box but somehow I slipped and made a cut on the top of my hand. Right where your thumb connects to your hand. Well it was pretty deep and was perfectly straight and was a slight laceration... So my friend said are you ok? I said sure just let me stop the bleeding and see if I need to go to a doc. I decided not to go since you usually have a 3 hour waiting line in the hospital and didn't think it was worth it. It has turned in quit an ugly scar though but I don't care... But once I stopped the bleeding my friend took a look at it and said that's about as perfect as you can make an accidental cut... So that's why Perfect_Cut :D

Yeah I've had a number of accidents but never had to get (or went) stitches....

I almost stabbed myself one day >:( I was sharpening my knife and as usual I put the sharpening stone on my leg so I have a lil more grip and a stable ground to work with... But as I was sharpening I slipped and it pushed on my leg... I'm just soooo damn happy that I wasn't finished sharpening and that I was just at the beginning stage of sharpening that knife :smitten:

Nah I don't really like those sharpening systems... It was just a "minor" and rather stupid accident and I don't put the sharpening stone on my leg anymore that's for sure

I like to sharpen my knives the old way. With a sharpening stone and a diamond sharpening steel.

I opened it up and got this warm feeling.....well maybe it was just the hot cup of coffee I was drinking... ;D Anyway, I immediately decided to join. This is a great thread! I'd have had to irritate all of you with PM's in order to get this info!* ;D

I chose "Lugsalot" for my EDCF handle because people think I carry too much gear. Needless to say these people are not members of the EDCF, and are always asking me if they can borrow that which they do not want to lug themselves! Also, it sounds like a certain knight with whom you may be familiar (I favor John Cleese's overzealous portrayal in Monty Python and the Holy Grail!).* :armor:

Whenever I join a forum, I always try to select a name that fits the context of the forum and tells the other users a bit about myself, for example (in order of use):

On Glock Talk and rec:guns I was "GunBunny."
On Blade Forums I'm "Right-o-way" (I used to fence...I wonder where my foil is right now?).
On The Firing Line I'm "PRK Inmate."

I've made this forum my home now, so I should probably delete my accounts with the others. I was just lurking the whole time anyway. Now if only I could remember my passwords...* :dummy:

Buffalohump
09-08-2006, 10:32 AM
I kinda covered this when I introduced myself, but anyway...

Although I was born and live in Zululand, I have always been fascinated by the American West, particularly the Native American tribes and culture. I admire their spiritual philosophy, passion for the earth and wild things, martial skills and affinity for edged weapons.

One of the people who have written about Native American culture with considerable empathy and accuracy is Larry McMurtry.

Larry's greatest book is Lonesome Dove. There are two very bad Indians in the book. One is Buffalo Hump. He is surely one of the greatest villians in the history of modern literature, and I've always found villians more interesting, although the two heroes of the book, Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call, are two of the most memorable characters you will ever meet.

If you haven't read the book or seen the TV series, I urge you to do both. Particularly if you love cowboys (and who doesn't?)

kkimo
09-08-2006, 02:03 PM
Kimo is Hawaiian for James.

My middle name is Ian, which is Scottish for John.

A pair of brothers down the block from me as a kid lived in Hawaii 9 months out oh the year. They found out my middle name, was "John" and decided to used the Hawaiian equivalent for John rather the Scottish. Unfortunately they were hoale kids, so they got it wrong, and called me Kimo.

First time I ever tried to use the name on the internet (on q-link, anyone remember what that became?) Kimo was already taken, so rather than think of something else, I added a k in front and left it all lower case. I've used kkimo ever since.

A few years later, I found out that it is very close to a Tagolog slang word that caused me to get a lot of odd responses from many Phillipinos I encountered online. Interestingly enough, it happened continiously for about 5-6 years, but hasn't occured at all in almost a decade.

I tried every combination of my name and initials and would have had to follow them with a 2-digit number! From outta the blue, I thought about my co-owned, get-away shack out in the Mojave. The previous owner named his 100+yd driveway to the main dirt road "TEEVEEODEE Rd." the desert ate the paint off the 4X4, and he repainted it TVOD Rd. Short for TeleVision OverDose Rd. The shack ain't on the grid and is completely surrounded by BLM land: http://www.vbbigot.com/360s/cabinpan1vs.jpg I've been tvodrd pretty much everywhere since coming on line.

That's funny. My Granny told me I was a wolf dreamer.

Since the self-portrait thread was resurrected on the grounds of lots of new faces joining up, I figured this one would deserve a :bump: as well, despite being an oldish thread. Besides, I just happened to find it and thought it was very interesting.

So, I'm Valolammas. That's Finnish for "lightsheep" or "sheep of light". The light part I picked, when I joined CPF, so that doesn't need much explaining. The sheep, on the other hand... I used to read Bladeforums a lot and they use "*******" as a derogatory term. Then I saw someone on CPF with a "not a sheep" tag, and figured that dang it, I'll be a sheep if no-one else likes them. Sheep are kind and communal creatures, right? A bit timid and dumbish, maybe, but so am I. All in all, I figured it would be a way of indicating my nationality to other Finns while being a sort of private joke at the same time. You know, black sheep, lightsheep... Ok, so it's not a good joke.

When I joined here I found it easiest to just use the same name.

I have had a tendancy to let my beard/goatee/moustache grow shaggy have since I was a teenager, the moustache more than the beard when I was younger (sorta fumanchu-ish). One summer a friend of a friend told me it made look like a catfish & started calling me "catfish" every time he saw me. One day when I'd just hopped into our friend's car & been greated with the catfish handle my buddy said "doesn't that bother you?" to which I distinctly remember replying "Could be worse, could be Bubba...". Took me about .3 seconds to realize I'd never live that one down, it just stuck. A couple of years later when I went online for the first time (1997 or 98) & created my first hotmail account everything I came up with had already been taken & I would have had to add numbers to the end. Since I knew all my friends would get the name I tried bubbacatfish & have never looked back. Same hotmail account for about 10 years now, use the same name on CPF, BF, USN, here & a few other forums I belong to. It's unique enough that I have never had to add numbers on the end thankfully, although I gets all kinds of odd looks when people hear it for the first time.

My "other" persona on the Information Super Causeway begins with a "P" as well and when I began filling out the registration form here at EDCF, something told me to keep my lives separate.

In a quick flash of creative genius (also known as "dumb luck"), I hit upon the concept of a "priest" being between two realities (spiritual and temporal). So this nick is the one that intercedes between my other persona and my interest in "gear". I'm Priestly here, on CPF, on BF and on KF.

Versatek
09-21-2007, 02:34 PM
I am a self-taught guitar player who started in about 5th grade. I played all through high school and college. When I graduated college, I didn't have time to keep up with it, and put it away for about ten years.

When I decided to start playing again, I got out the '79 Les Paul, plugged it in and said, "I liked how this sounded?" Musical tastes change, and this was not what I liked to hear. The late '70s were not Gibson's best years, either.

So, I set out looking for a replacement. I found an out-of-the-way shop that had a good assortment of various makers. I played just about everything in the shop: Jackson, Fernandez, ESP, Dean, Hamer, etc. Many were nice. Many were nice, but none grabbed me. There were a couple from a maker I had never heard, but I passed on them because they were less conservatively styled than I was used to. The manager suggested I play them, as I had played just about everything on the walls.

Needles to say, I was smitten. This was what I was looking for in sound and playability. It was made by US Masters Guitar Works of Middleton, Wisconsin. It is their Vector-series guitar made of Australian Lacewood with their Versatek pickup harness.

If I attached the picture correctly: This isn't exactly mine, but it is close (from manufacturer's website). Mine is prettier! ;D

I wanted something Danish. Thus my avatar is a Lego viking.
Harald Blåtand (Blåtand = Bluetooth (http://www.bluetooth.com/Bluetooth/SIG/)) was an ancient viking king ruling what is today Denmark and Norway around 950 AD.
He officially adopted Christianity replacing the Asa-belief (ancient Nordic gods), thus beginning the Christian era in Denmark. You can take a look at the rune stone (http://www.erantis.dk/guide/viking/jelling.htm) he (I don't think personally) raised stating his adoption of Christianity on behalf of the Danish people, also known as the "Certificate of Baptism of Denmark". If you take a close look at the first picture of the rune stone you may be able to see a figure of a guy standing in a cross like posture, and it is believed it is depicting the crucified Christ. Scrolling further down is a picture of a colored copy of the rune stone, that may give a clearer view. Unfortunately all text is in Danish (Bubbacatfish care to translate?).

For non-Danish people I would imagine his name is to be known from the Bluetooth technology.

Papacat was a name that my mother-in-law made up when I would call my fiancee.  At the time, she was living in L.A. and I was up north in the bay area, staying with my parents to save money.  So when I called, my mother-in-law would say to her daughter, "Papacat's calling."  Now, my wife and I use it as a silly handle when we're talking to each other on the phone.

platypus? For a long time, I'd been known for carrying a SAK, and then later a multitool. While trying to amuse my little niece, I found pictures of a platypus. It flashed on me that the platypus is kind of a Swiss Army Knife critter. So I started using it as my user ID on some systems.

A while later, the late Richard Jeni came out with his comedy routine, and later TV show based on his concept of the Platypus Man. All confused and not knowing what he's supposed to be. That cemented my identification with the platypus.

Well, my name is Eddie, and my Wife started to call me "Edski" one day. Somehow it grew to "Edski Larski"; don't ask, she can't even remember why. The day came to hit the Information Super Highway, and all of the Screen Names I wanted were taken, so I contracted "Edski Larski" to "Elarski", and it took. Now I use it for everything, and some people even call me that in person.

Mine is my CB Handle. I have been driving for almost 5 years.I started out with an Over The Road Company when I finished Driving School. When I was assigned to my second truck there it had a sticker/graphic on each side that said Driver Trainer.I obviously was not a Driver Trainer at that time.

When you work for a company that has well over 18,000 trucks and you basically live in own for 18 or more days at a time when you are out on the road, you tend to want to do things that make the truck"Your Truck" so to speak.

Obviously, there are some things that a Trucking company is not going to let you do.My terminal was fairly lenient about stickers as long as they were in good taste. So as I was getting ready to peel off "Driver Trainer" I thought that it might be cool to leave the "D" and
"Train" and peel the rest.

A bunch of Drivers that I knew started knowing that I was at one of the 23 or so terminals when they saw "D Train" on the side of the truck.A few would great me with Dtrain so I started using it as my Handle.

Lots of people would always ask me what it meant. Most of the Time I would tell them since the company I worked for had the slowest Over The Road Trucks out there I knew my Truck was'nt fast enough to be the A,B,or even C train. I decided that is why I was the Dtrain since even though my truck was the slowest I still made my pick ups and deliveries on time because I would keep at it until the load was done.

After I had been there 1 year clean I knew that it had stuck.I picked up my first new truck a 2005 Volvo 660.I picked it up in Memphis TN with only 200 miles on it.18 months later I turned it in to start where I am now with 212,000 miles on it.

When I got back to my home terminal the first time when I picked up the truck I needed to go to the shop to get the A/C fixed. The Shop Manager looked at the truck and said something was not right with my new truck. When I came back to the shop to pick it up after the A/c and a few other items were corrected he told me to look at the truck and said that "Now,everything is right with the Truck".

He had gone to the Parts Room and got a second set of Stickers and put them on the truck like I had done to the last truck I had.

Sorry for the long post thanks for letting me share. It is very neat to read the other posts and see/read how someone comes up with a screen name.It is alot like the way many Drivers choose a CB handle or have one hung on them by other Drivers that they know or meet during their travels.

My name is Jason and the suffix Gnar is rooted in the term gnarly which is old school surfer chatter.

That's it.
It seems normal to me now, but i admit it is a weird name. The 99 does not stand for anything, On most of the other boards I surf, I'm just Jaygnar. It would have been the same here but I had some problems creating the account and had to add a number to it 99 was obvious.

When I first got into computer games, it transitioned to my name on there... as names became scarcer through the newer games, it's graduated to what it is now.

hooplehead is a term used in the HBO series "Deadwood" for the drunk, idiotic masses who get fleeced at the saloon/tables/brothels. kinda funny, and fits my purpose here and other places.

now that i think about it, i have so many different screen names and online personas its kinda crazy. i guess lately ive been subconciously trying to cut down, so hooplehead is here to stay!

HammerHead
11-30-2007, 06:04 PM
I needed a callsign/handle for MercNet/NetMech and eventually the StarLance forums, way back in the days of dial-up. I always liked the way Eastwood said, "Get out of the way, hammerhead," in <i>Dirty Harry</i>, so I turned it into a proper noun for my own use :)

It carried over to JediNet, TFN, ToRN, LSA etc. Somewhere in the early days people started abbreviating me as "HH". That's led to all manner of fun confusion, ranging from boot makers to one reference where I was mistaken for a less than reputable character from <i>Lolita</i>.

*shrug* Dirty Harry's cooler ;)

I got my name from way back (well 15yrs back anyway) - When i was in kindergarten they had this thing when you write your name on a tag - I misspelt my name Nick by adding an extra "N" at the end. I was very shy and never corrected anyone for calling me Nickn Wong. So now years later my friends still laugh at me for it and it sort of stuck.

06-11-2008, 03:11 AM
Since about every possible name combination was used when I tried to sign up for an AOL account when I was a kid I had to get creative, so I used "Piusbovis." It's Latin for "Holy Cow" (I think) and in every possible game, internet, online registration thing it has never been taken, so I've stuck with it since.

Elric
06-11-2008, 09:41 AM
I was an avid Dungeons & Dragons player and DM back in the early 80's. At that point, I hadn't read the Michael Moorcock series but one of the guys I played with had and, since my name is Eric, Elric was a natural corruption after the main character. I'm somewhat less glum and gaunt (quite the opposite on that count, LOL) but otherwise, I have gone by Elric pretty much ever since.

Peccavi

fshalor
06-12-2008, 09:01 AM
"fshalor" is a character/roll in some books I've been working on for a while. The three books are sci-fi, taking place about 50 years in the future, 150 beyond that and then another 150 later.

I've been using it for a long time. Probably started around 2000 or so for email and website info.

Fshalor is a bit of a Fifth Business character. The roll is passed form person to person as needed in the books. The person sits behind the scenes normally, making efforts to "send things toward the proper conclusion". Or, if sitting on the side lines and guiding doesn't work; they take direct action.

Most people end up saying the name as "Shalor" (with a silent "f") or "Eff- shalor" with a hard, seperated F.

As a joke, someone once turned it into an acronym after teasing a few chapters out of me. "For some have all; lots own rubbish". It does kind of fit.

And what was possibly the most embarrassing moment while using the name was when a hot british chick started referring to me as "fish" on team-speak while playing an fps. fsh --> fish.

LOL), shfit great with the TRD short shifter kit ...

i missed it, i shouldn't have sold it :(

Rawls
07-09-2008, 08:17 PM
Rawls.

First, I like the sound of the name. Sort of like cellar door and Tolkein.

Primarily though, it is in honor of the American philosopher John Rawls (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Rawls). I read his book "A Theory of Justice" in graduate school and it changed my life. I basically stopped doing what I was doing and chose to do something entirely different with my life. How often does that happen? If you follow the link, BTW, the liberalism he is referring to is the good kind (the leave me alone, libertarian kind). I am probably more liberal in the traditional sense than most of the people here, but it is only because that overlaps with the Rawlsian/Mills liberal.

Ok, I thought this would be interesting and on a whim. But as the title says what is with your name? Mainly why did you choose your forum name.

So to start, my forum name is the name that I use for all of my online persona's especially in gaming. The origins branch all the way back to 1999 when I first got online and created an AOL IM account. Originally I had no idea what to choose so I had the automatic name creator come up with one and it chose MuskratHog72. Which was fitting as Muskrat was my favorite GI Joe and 72 was my football number. So, over time I dropped the hog and became Muskrat72.

And that is my story. Now, whats with your name?
