View Full Version : What is/are your favorite cigar(s)?

After my husband corrupted--er, umh, I mean, introduced me to cigars, it didn't take me long to find some favorites--and I even introduced him to a couple of good ones he hadn't tried yet. I enjoy Fuente's Cuban Coronas, 8-5-8s, Petit Coronas, Cubanitos, Short Stories, and Exquisitos frequently. I like natural and maduro wrappers, though sometimes I actually prefer the maduro, and when I have a couple of extra dollars and/or a special occasion (Hey, it's almost the weekend! Let's have a smoke!), I go for an Ashton VSG. I also tried some from Latin Gold in San Antonio last time I was "home." I have recently tried and liked the Rocky Patel Vintage Series as well. So in my continuing quest for another good smoke, I'd like to know what others like/prefer/swear by/are addicted to... 8)

Hav-a-tampa Jewels Sweet, yep the cheap stuff, but they tastes good and folks actually like the way they smell. When I was an OTR trucker, I'd sometimes smoke 15 a day. For a special occasion, I'd get a few Macanudos or Cohibas. Rarely smoke a pipe, but if I do it's with Borkam Riff Whiskey tobacco.

A good source I've used for years is Thompson Cigar Co. (http://secure.thompsoncigar.com/default.aspx)

Never tried one of those, but what the hey, might be a good backup in a cigar emergency. I drive about an hour and a half one way to go contra dancing, and on the drive home, I always unwind with a cigar. I forgot to take any one time, so I bought a pack of White Owls at the Exxon on the way. Ooops. First time I ever put a cigar out and tossed the package. :(

And as far as others liking or disliking the smell, well..., as Tommy Lee Jones says in the Fugitive movie, "I Don't Care." Actually, I've had several folks whom I would expect to say, "Yuck, that stinks!" surprise me and say, "That smell reminds me of my father when I was a kid," or "We always knew when my uncle was visiting by that smell." And my grandfaather used to smoke a pipe with vanilla tobacco. Though his body was pretty weak, his mind was as sharp as ever to the end, and he really enjoyed his pipe and reading.

Thanks for the link; I'll check it out. :)

These things are good.. :)
Since I quit the cigarettes a bunch of years ago I have had one of the Backwoods.. Nectar to the Gods...

Here in Canada there are some fine cigars available to us, my Father who is a cigar smoker from Detroit loves the things I can dig up around here..

Pyd, send a dozen Havana Upmans right away! :) wait make that 2 dozen..

oh would that be wonderful.. I smoked the one and only one of those I ever had last week, it had been

in my humidor for 10 years, no fooling..it was sublime..so simple, earthy, delicious!

Many cigars today are just hysterical with loads of flavors and spiciness and overwhelming strength..

Mostly I smoke Fuente Hemingway Signatures -- I like the Cameroon wrapper, but lately even the Fuentes have needed more aging to be really good.

That's one reason I cancelled my Thompson cigar club membership, the quality was lagging -- so now I'm living off the last 4 or 5 boxes of Signatures I have left..and they just get better with time...

I was passing thru Kentucky a couple of years ago when I came across Kentucky Black Gold (http://www.dannystobacco.com/itempage.asp?ItemID=3419700024) cigars. They were pretty good, so I sent some to soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan. You can get them in a box, but I liked the Kentucky humidor(glass jar) they also come in.

We have a JR a little over an hour from here up on 95. Cigars and oh so much more.... We have a neat little tobacconist shop here in our town where I buy most of mine. Sometimes I will check out other little places along the way if I am running low. There is also a great place down on the coast a couple of hours away.

Hmmmm, I never thought of them as black cigars. I also didn't think I would actually like a maduro when I first started smoking them. My first was a Butera, which was so mild, I thought I was smoking air. Not much flavor. :P I just kept trying till I found some that I liked, and they happened to be maduros.

Well, I was at W-M the other day, and the cigar store was closed, so I bought a pouch of these--the sweet ones. Was torn between those and the "Mild and Wild." I have probably smoked half of them. They are not the prettiest little cigars, but are good, quick smokes, and they are indeed sweet. My one real complaint is the little pieces of tobacco that stay behind after each puff. Bleh. >:( And sometimes they burn really funkily--looks like a burning stick. ;D But I think they could be my emergency back ups. Thanks!

Define TOO expensive. >:D

You can get a tin of Macanudos or Fuente Cubanitos (10 per pack). I pay about $16 for the Cubanitos. Stromdrane's link to Thompson Cigars showed a box of 50 Cubanitos for around $85 (off the top of my head). Rocky Patel makes tins of their small Vintage cigar, 5 to the tin. I think I pay around $12 for those. CAO makes a small one, but they seemed to have increased their prices quite a bit. And Fuente makes an Exquisito, one of my faves, which is bigger than a Cubanito, but smaller than a Petite Corona. They are around $2 a piece. I find these are very good smokes. I don't have a lot to spend, so I try to spend it on decent ones that I will enjoy.

And of course, there is the "rustic" Backwoods smoke, heh, heh. $4 for 8 at W-M.

Perhaps that is a start, anyway.

The last cigar I smoked was a Rocky Patel Vintage '90 "A" size that was gifted to me. Not a small cigar though @ 7.5" x 54. The "A" size is part of a 2005 limited edition, 1000 boxes with 5 each of three different cigars; Edge Maduro, Vintage 1990, & Rocky Patel Sun Grown. I still have a "A" size Sun Grown in the Humi, maybe this weekend....

I roll my own cigarettes. American Spirit blue pouch, pure tobacco no crap. Quit a few days ago though so now this thread has me Jonesing. One thing about smoking the natural no additive tobacco is the cravings are about 95% mental though.

I used to work in a tobacco shop many years ago and I have always enjoyed a good cigar. I rarely smoke them anymore and now there are so many brands that I don't know most of them anymore. But H Upmanns, Montecristos, Romeo y Julieta were pretty much what I like, usually in the petit corona or similar size.

I have a box of Upmann 160th Aniversarios aging in my humidor. Very nice smoke. I'll grab one every once in a while. Unfortuantely, when they're gone, they're gone. :'(

For an everyday cigar, I like Punch rothschilds, or something from Romeo Y Julieta . Hoyos are good too. The Excaliburs are a staple cigar for me.

Avo's = yummy too.

Another great value, try a Padron 2000. Their anniversary series are excellent.

I think I've had just about every kind of premium cigar out there. 8)

Great thread!

I've tried "a lot" of different brands and types of cigars through the years. As I hail from Holland (which, as some of you might or might not know) has a rich history as a cigar making country I get to choose between imported and locally produced cigars.

Whereas South American cigars are mostly of the big long filler type, Dutch cigars are mostly short fillers, although there are several manufactures that also produce long fillers.

My current favorite for imported cigars are Cuban Quintero's. I've tried more expensive ones as well, but at EUR 2 a piece, they're a very smooth and flavourful smoke, and I've never had a badly rolled one yet (as has happened to me several times with Romeo y Julieta's, talk about seeing your money going up in smoke...).

For local cigars, it has to be Van der Donk Corona's. They are very traditionally made handrolled short fillers, and very hard to get even here because the company is family owned and has a limited production capacity. The taste is full and rich, so best for after dinner. If I can't get those, I usually get Oud Kampen Wild Havana's or Senorita's. Also very well made, very tastefull cigars. Both brands are very well established and have a long history as companies that produce top quality cigars. Although they taste great, they are much cheaper than your average Cuban cigar.

For those of you that travel to Europe, I can heartily recommend both these brands. Try them, you won't be dissappointed! Or if anyone is interested, I could even mail a few to promote our local cigars. Just drop me a line.

Also, I was wondering if any of you ever tried this trick; when I was a student and very low on funds, I experimented a bit with cheaper cigars (10 handmade long fillers from the Phillippines for about EUR 5, I believe the brand is 'Alhambra', still a pretty good deal IMO) which were not a bad smoke in themselves, but I stored them in a glass jar with a bottlecap containing the last few drops of my favourite whiskey placed on the bottom. The whiskey would slowly evaporate and the cigars would absorb the fumes/aroma of the whiskey. That way, I would get subtly Glenmorangie flavoured cigars! I still do this sometime when I have an almost empty bottle of nice scotch standing around. [ edit; this also works with Cognac, Brandy, Calvados or Armagnac]

With best regards,

Ruud

Thomas Riley Marshall, Woodrow Wilson's Vice President, was listening to a Senate debate, a dreary recitation about what was needed in the U.S., when suddenly he had a grand vision. Said Marshall: "What this country needs is a good five-cent cigar."

I'm big on FRUGAL so I pack Garcia Y Vega English Coronas (four pack in brown plastic tubes for about $5). They taste okay and I don't have to fiddle with the cutter. I just started working 3rd shift again and the smokes keep me from going into a ditch on the way home.

I think my favorites are H. Upmans in the silver tubes. I don't remember the size or name, but I'd know them when I saw them. I don't have any right now as I smoke so rarely I don't want to let the >$4 cigars go bad.

I just bought a Ronson Jetlite (based on recommendations from this forum) and I'm dying to try it out on my stogies.

I smoked Backwoods for a while (my dad had too). They were awful  My wife (GF at the time) who smokes cigarettes asked to try one and nearly threw up. i thought they were cool 'cuz they looked rugged and like something Clint Eastwood would smoke if he had no name.

Unless something has changed in the last few years, U.S. Customs does allow up to 5 Cuban cigars to be brought back to the states for personal use. I've done it a couple of times, but it was in the nineties.

Whether that holds true for shipping, I can't say, but I would think a custom form marked as "gift" would be the same thing.

I was starting to worry that US Customs might have thrown a hissy fit and nabbed his cigars because there were one or two Cubans in there...But if what you said is correct, that probably has not happened.

Anyway, I look forward to hearing what everyone thought of them (even if you think some tasted like dried up peat set ablaze ).
Trivial fact I found out: Holland is the second largest exporter of cigars after the USA. That being said...

I didn't ask at first because I smoke so rarely that I would be afraid that they'd go bad before I got to them (no humidor), but with the holidays coming I'm expecting to get a bit more sit-around-the-porch-thinking-about-life time.

I think a cigar exchange is a great idea, but what cigars are NOT available in Holland?

We should all review the cigars here on this thread. Should we have a standard review?

An old thread I know but I do love an occasional cigar. My favorite cigar ever is a cuban cohiba but as I cannot get those legally, I really like El Rey Del Mundo cigars. I get the Robusto Larga's at a local shop. A medium body Honduran smoke...Very tasty. I have one in the humidor that should be about ready to go. I also enjoy some pipe tobaccos. Another local shop sells a very tasty mix called Nightcap that I really enjoy. Something about smoking a pipe or cigar that makes me go into relaxation mode.

I've been hooked on the Dominican Republic Cohiba's, and Bering #8's. and I've got a CAO Brazilia, a CAO Gold Label, and a Macanudo Court sitting in the Humidor.

I don't really smoke that often, but I do enjoy a pipe, or cigar every so often.

RUUD S. I'd be interested in a couple of those Dutch cigars, if you don't mind PM me some more info.

Ruud,

I got the cigars today! Would it be okay to post the photo I took of them? There are three with no bands and I wanted to ask you what they were.

Also, just so you know, the ones with no bands were outside of the ziploc bag. They were in the case, but outside the bag. I guess Customs had to take a closer look at them.

I will try to smoke them as soon as I can and get back to you with my review.

Thanks so very much,

Cubans - Cohibas or Romeo y Julietta, minis for a quick taste, fullsized for an occasion. Dutch Winterman as day-to-day "fuel", usually Half Corona size.

I recently managed to get my hands on a couple of Cuban Cohibas. They are need of some rejuvination and have been put in the humidor for awhile. I can't wait as the last real Cohiba I smoked was probably my favorite cigar ever. I have been on a mission since to find something close.

Looked through all these posts and nobody mentioned my favourites--CANDELA!!!

Usually Arturo Fuente 8-5-8 Candela will do, none of those fake dyed ones for me.

Ive been liking the Rockey Patel 1992 vintage series. they claim medium, but I say strong on the 5 or 6 I've had.
But my normal cigar is handmade from the folks at Las Vegas Cigar Company (http://www.lvcigar.com/) Do yourself a favor and give them a try.

I used to enjoy watching the little old ladies hand roll them down in Ybor City in Tampa. That's about as close to smoking one I've ever gotten. Used to send them to my brother in Oklahoma.

You might want to try Garcia Y Vega English Caronas. Some like 'em and some dont. I like them myself. You can get a box of 20 for around $25.00. They are a machine made smoke, but I think they have a really good taste. Measurements are 5.2" x 41 ring gauge. For the money they are a great everyday smoke IMHO. My dad and I would puff Cohibas on his back deck. That said I tend to keep a cigar clamped in my teeth most of the time and for store bought I go with the Swishers. I like to roll my own but have not had my own plants in a few years and did not get a chance to talk to anyone locally [[N.C. apparently tobacco country]] to see about getting some from them.

Holt's sell. "Little Havana Overruns" 45$ a bundle. With a little time in your humidor, they are most excellent.

I like H Upmann's and love Pleadies cigars when I can find them. Like anything, it's all a matter of personal preference. Like wine, more money doesn't ALWAYS mean better product.

Anything by Rocky Patel. My go to cigars are 5 Vegas Gold Labels, Cibao, and the CI Legends Green Labels. I have a pipe too that I smoke on occasion. The best tobacco I I ever got for that was some Davidoff Cool Water. I got that in Kuwait, and haven't been able to find it since I have been back stateside.

I usually EDC at least one cigar and a cutter along with a torch.

Anyone else?

I enjoy Cohibas, Perdomos and CAOs.

Dutch Masters are terrible, If you’re on a budget for cigars let me suggest these to you.

20 dollars for a 20 pack, at your local cigar shop one will run you about 1.45-2.00 at the highest. Probably the best cheap smoke I’ve ever had.

Going on a cruise next month and looking to take some cigars .. I'm new to the cigar scene.. Anyone recommend a beginner cigar? Looking for something kinda short and mild .. The large cigars dont really impress me. Maybe a robusto size??

Arturo Fuente - Hemingway (http://www.famous-smoke.com/arturo+fuente+hemingway+best+seller+5+pack+cigars/item+18680?kws=ZWW4354&utm_source=Google&utm_medium=shopping&utm_content=cigars_CI-HEM-SELN5PK&utm_campaign=ZWW4354)
Nice burn, good taste, 5 pack is a good buy, or get a couple of singles if your gonna mix it up with others to test/try.
They come larger lengths, and with Madera wrappers if you like and can find them.
