Hi Stu, what kind of steel is your Strider blade?
Stutoffee
04-14-2006, 02:20 PM
Hola, Simbad! TBH Ive no idea what sorta steel it is.The left face of the blad has the Buck Strider logo, the right face has a kinda geometric shaped design on it that is almost a "boot shape" Dunno if this throws any light on the subject. It seems to hold an edge well, Ive only touched up the edge near the tip once.

If you aren't sure what blade steel it is then it's probably 420HC.* I have the Buck Strider Tarani 882SBTG that has ATS-34 steel.* Heat-treated by Bos.* *O0* It's got ATS-34 stamped into the blade along with the Bos heat-treat logo.*
I think those are TACCOM handles, if I'm correct.* It also has a black blade so I believe it is this model on Buck's website: SBMF 889BK (http://www.buckknives.com/catalog/detail/472/233).
http://www.buckknives.com/images/uploads/med_889BK.jpg (http://www.buckknives.com/images/uploads/889BK.jpg)
Most likely 420HC, unless someone's modified it.* Speaking of, I love that tritium mounted in the handle.* Where'd you have that done, or did you do it yourself?* Needless to say, it looks great.

Yep! Its the SMBF 889 alright! So, your comments on the steel will be correct. I put the Tritium vial in myself, very easy, just drilled & cut with a Stanley knife, little bit of Araldite in the slot & dropped the vial in there. I intend to get another of these blades & file/sand down the handle as the chequering is VERY abrasive to pockets. Ive seen some threads on other forums where users have smoothed down the grips & in one case added "Strider stripes" to the blade & pocket clip with gun-blue remover.
The tritium vial is very useful, can ALWAYS find my knfe now. Glad you like.

Very nice work on the vial in the handle.
As far as the shape on the blade of the Strider/Buck, it is an outline
of the state of Idaho, where Buck moved to.
I also carry an SBMF 889, almost every day. A great heavy duty knife,
that can pull double duty as a real good SD knife.

Thanks for the comments, guys. And, Terry thanks for the Idaho info, I thought it looked like a state! Couldnt agree more with you about the blade, its a superb EDC piece. Feels SO sturdy & solid, that I almost forget that its a folder. At first, I wasnt THAT satisfied with the vial as I felt the slot was a little large & needed a fair bit of Araldite to fill it, but from now on EVERY tactical folder(and matbe flashlights, too!) that I buy is gonna have something similar fitted. I guess I'll get better every time I do one, eh?

Got the camera out again & took a snap of some more gear that I often carry instead of/in addition to my previously submitted EDC:-
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c309/Stutoffee/DSC01785.jpg
USP Compact: (Sadly!) is only an Airsoft model (also probably soon to be outlawed by the "nanny state" in the UK)
Sony Ericcson phone: makes a great PDA & the accompanying Nite-Ize holster holds Swisscard, Mag Solitaire, 2 Styli, Cash & Condom
Leatherman Micra: often carried instead of Gerber Shortcut
Becker Necker
SAK Huntsman with Firesteel & Spycapsule of Vaseline/Cotton
Gerber Kiowa
Gerber Applegate-Fairbairn Folder
(One of these three folders sometimes carried instead of My Strider Buck SMBF)
SAK Mini Champ: Sometimes carried as "******* friendly" blade
Credit Card Survival tool: often in wallet
Inova Style 6LED AA Flashlight; Sometimes carried instead of LED Lenser
Kenwood Car Stereo Faceplate & remote velcro'd to carry case
SAS Tin: carried in Coat pocket
Mini maglite: carried in coat pocket
Cold Steel Koga: sometimes carried in coat pocket
Casco 24" Expandable baton: Sometimes carried in coat pocket
Kershaw Amphibian: sometimes carried IWB
Leatherman Wave: carried on belt when doing "projects/construction"

Hello Stu, itīs like summertime here* >:D, so it`s time to rotate/reduce my EDC (part of it) to start wearing my shorts, here is what I got now: being tired of my Chrage Ti with its very short bits I prefer to carry my big S.Tool 200 and a spare knife.
HDS U60
Leatherman Super Tool 200
Spyderco Delica SS
Wallet
Keys with Arc AAA-P and Prybaby (not shown)
Cell Phone (not shown)

Stutoffee-
I love the Kershaw Amphibian! I lost mine in a fire years ago. I'd forgotten all about it. Thanks for the pic!

Hey, Simbad. Thanks for pic/details of your Summer EDC. Like it. Ive not invested in ANY Spydies yet or a Prybaby, but I think they'll be next on the list. I SO hope to get out to Mallorca in August, I one day hope to live out there.
Todd, youre right, the Amphibian is a great little blade, very sharp straight outta the box but I suspect it would be more useful having a "chisel-type" tip a bit like the ABC Operator knife (cant recall who makes it? Nealy?) but I just cant bear ruining that stilleto point.

I hate to be nosey, but what's with carrying an airsoft pistol? :idiot2:
Stutoffee,
Isn't the carrying of fixed blade or locking blade knives outlawed in the UK? I'm sure that folding batons are not looked upon favorably either.

The Pistol isnt carried often, usually in my bag on the way to a mates house where a group of us "airsoft", he has a huge garden set up with moving/swinging/pop-up targets & he's into airsoft in a big way having a heavily modified MP5A4 which has an awesome rate of fully-automatic fire.
PLUS, lets be honest, its the closest we can get to owning firearms here in the UK. They are great fun as "back garden plinkers!" but probably not the best for Self defense. The pellets sure sting when they hit you though! :)
Youre right, fixed blades & locking folders are illegal, as are batons, but as I see it, so long as I dont go around vandalising phone boxes or bus shelters or mugging old ladies, (or dress like a "scally"!) the chances of my being stooped/searched by a cop are pretty slim.

Duh. I never thought that maybe you liked Airsoft a lot. I thought it was some sort of self-defense carry as a replacment for an actual pistol. That would be a little :idiot2:

There are probably areas in Manchester where "displaying" the USP would frighten off would-be assailants, but I wouldnt choose to carry it for SD, No. IF we were permitted to carry sidearms over here, I suspect I would invest in the USP Compact, though. Its a beautifully made piece of kit (even the airsoft version!) LOL

Its a old school" running dog" push dagger that I wear horizontal on my waist with a slight offset from the center line it works well for this type of carry.

Thanks for the complement. The wallet was made by Vadim from Vessleathers.com. He does wonderful knife holsters also.
