More suggestions ???

Howdy , I am new in the neighborhood.

I agree with some folks who said that there are sooo many categories and sub-categories. For example, I think one division is for Items that covers ONE section for all illumination devices (flashlights, candles ..etc.) , Otherwise many of them will look deserted after some time. And also, members will have to go around in a maze of subcategories.

IMHO, categories like " what is EDC?" and " Goals of this forum" need only be subjects or threads in the "general discussion" category.

I would say about half of the existing number of categories is OK.

Another thing is about the buttons up there. I think that <New Topic>, <New Poll> , and <Post Reply> ought to stand out. Anything else like "print", or "mark as read" , " notify moderator" ...etc. should be secondary.

On the positive side, while writing this post I can see the nice collection of functions and smilies.
I can only say " well done" .

The background of quoted text is purple , Too dark in my humble opinion. How about light blue or just plain white.

I agree there is tending to too many sections. Splitting too finely could make it harder for subjects to get critical mass.

Is there a reason to avoid a "misc" section, for things which don't have their own area? I'd actually be interested to see what weird, uncategorised stuff people carry. I'm probably not the only person to carry a tape measure, for instance, but I don't think tape measures deserve their own section.

You don't seem to have an area for optics. You'd be surprised how many people frequently carry binoculars or a monocular (I'm a monocular man myself). A lot of people also carry a magnifying glass or loupe or fresnel lens, and there are even such things as EDC microscopes. The ETS people all have signalling mirrors.

Maybe a combined "Cameras and optics" section?

Have you thought about a "group buy" section? The main idea is to get together a group of people who all want to buy a given item, and then negotiate a reduced price with a dealer. I like them because they act as product recommendations - if a bunch of people all want something it must be good. The downside is that they can be a lot of work for whoever organises it, especially if they have to repackage and post stuff on themselves.

Are you waiting until someone actually wants to organise one before you create the section?

Thanks for all the suggestions...the categories I'll leave up to jonsidneyb, but the other stuff...lemme see what I can do. If I can make a change for the better, I definitely will. If it's a limitation of the board software and time consuming beyond my wildest nightmares, then I plead the 5th. :angel:

Group buys can be proposed anytime in the BST section. I don't think we really need a seperate area for that just yet.

The strangest thing just happened. I tried to post from "preview" mode and when I hit Post nothing happened nothing at all. I hit Back which took me to a previous Preview page and at the top of that one in red was something like "someone has posted to this topic, maybe you should read it before posting". Anyway from that page I hit Post and it worked. Really odd.
