View Full Version : What pistol do you have in you BOB?

The Closer

I have a Walther P22 in my BOB. I use this pistol not so much because of its size or reliability, but because I can carry 1,000 rounds of .22lr in the smae amount of space as 50 rounds of 9mm. What do you all think and carry?

Ruger Single Six. I carry it for the same reason as you...light weight ammo. Not to mention that it's a tack driver. I love single actions.

For long term BOB a Sig Trailside .22 with 500 rounds of CCI Velociter ammo ::). Depending on the situation, I may also carry a 12g 870 Express shotgun....not a pistol but worth noting O0.

Ruger Mark II with adjustable sights and a bull barrell. As a companion a Ruger 1022 with 4x scope. Both pistol and rifle are tack drivers with standard .22lr ammo.

My handguns are likely to already be on me.

One thing to consider for a BOB. Would you want the pistol to be equally suitable for hunting as it is for defense?

I carry a Glock 23 on me, or in my MPB. I have a Springfield 1911-A1 that goes in my Maxpedition Falcon BOB. I can shoot double taps a lot better with the Springfield, and it handles better. The Glock is a good no nonsense point, and shoot alternative. As Jon said a good hunting round would also be a consideration for a BOB. I am looking for a 10mm in a 1911-A1 frame style to replace my .45. This is the least round I would really count on for bear. With grizzley I would just hope enough 10mm rounds would change his mind! Otherwise you just end up with a big :tickedoff: bear.

I don't keep a handgun in the BOB all the time.* The chosen gun is a Ruger Mark II 22 with bull barrel and holster.* But, it depends on the situation that may be developing.* If I am think sustenance, than it is a 22.* IF I am thinking self defense, then it is a 357.* I would probably have a rifle along with me as well along with a weather resistant case to protect it.* Frankly in my area, I would probably stay home and take my chances as I know the area much better and would have more resources available to me.* The only thing that will drive me from my home are WMD's (nuclear, chemical, or bacteriaological).* You stand a much better chance of survival where you already have shelter and some food.

The Ruger MKII and III are fine BOB pistols but make sure you have several loaded mags as well . I also like a Ruger 10/22 if you can find a folding stock . Once again several spare mags ans min 500 tounds ammo. Combine the 2 and you have a good amound of fire power. Weapons that can take small game and serve for SD also..

I also have the Walther P22 in BOB. with 6 boxes of hi velocity and a box of Stingers. Mine is the long barrel version , green & black.

I've got a scoped 10/22 to match in the long gun case, but not a folding stock. I want one.

Damn ! I was about to explain that besides all the Good reasons for putting the 22 in there , but honestly : because it is my least favorite to clean. So it's the easiest to pack away for "later."

Which is probably a recipe for trouble. I better at least add a small cleaning kit & some break free.

But like JonSydneyB said , my EDC gun will be on my hip anyway.... And with enough time to grab BOB I can also snatch up the Win 94 and Rem 870.

Glock 17, 6 hi-cap mags with a .22 conversion unit and 3 mags. 100 extra 9mm, 500 Remington Golden .22. The Glock is a tack-driver with the conversion unit, and takes less than 10 seconds to change from 9mm to .22. Add a Buck-Strider Solution, 2 Victorinox Deluxe Tinkers, small first aid kit, and you're set.

Not in my BOB but in the car, a government issued plain jane mismatched parts 1911a1 with 3 wilson mags (my own), throated, no recoil spring guide, new wilson slide stop everything else stock. Usually carried in a FoBUS holster when need to be carried. But most of the time in the car.

Hmmm....BOB? Need to start making one of my own.

I'm not a gun guy, but this thread caught my eye.

1. Why a pistol?
2. Why those particular pistols?
3. My only experience is with my issue M9. Why is that not a pistol that anyone chooses? I would think that in the case of armagedon the number of M9s that are hanging around would make it desirable if only for spare parts and ammo availability.
4. I'd have to do some research just to read some of the replies, wow. What is n the photo?

Pipedreams,

I have a gun on me at all times and in my BOB I carry a bersa 380, but I like the idea of the Ruger Single Six, I have one and it will take the place of the Bersa.......With 22 MAGS of course....Ya know I really like that single six..

Well I'll start with my opinion on your question. The .45 throws a rock almost 1/2 inch in diameter at about 1000 feet per second, and the 1911 makes it fairly easy to hanldle. That a lots energy. You are right that if armagedon were to come there would be plenty of guns, and ammo for whom ever had the speed, and internal fortitude to get them. That is exactly what prompted me to divest myself of all guns except the Kimber, and a double barrel shotgun. To many kids in the house, and I don't know that I could live with myself if an accident occured. That bag is never accessible to anyone other myself.

Now to the gear. Upper left going clockwise is a pocket organizer with several pens, small screwdrivers, moleskin notebook, a small leatherman, and flashlight. The picture in the front is a recent ID card of my 7 year old, in case God forbid I need to produce a recent picture of her. The Benchmade also goes in there. Next is a Luminox compass watch with aftermarket band. This is a nice watch but Luminox could have made it better with a screw down crown, and tritium markers on the compass. Below that is a rare Surefire A2 in black. Then there is the Kimber Eclipe in the formentioned .45acp. Custom gips that I made from a pair of Pacymeres, and inserted the US Navy Emblems. Next is the Benchmade Mel Pardue. This is not the auto, but I wish it were. Right under that is the Cross ATX Medalist fountain pen with a fine nib. And to finish it off is the paper sack that I used for the backdrop. I kind of like this old newspaper stuff, and I am thinking of trying to find it in a wallpaper as it is time to redo my office.

It is time to go through my BOB, and check all the contents so I'll take some pictures, and post when I can.

I carry a Sig P 245 and one extra magazine on me at all times. In my BOB I have 2 extra mags and a hundred rounds of ammo for it. I also have a hundred rounds of 357 and a speed loader for my Ruger Sp 101. It's the other handgun I plan on taking if I have to beet feet. Inside the bag is also an AR 7 Survival gun in 22 LR plus another hundred rounds for that

IP, as Katrina brought to light, if things go south, it may not be a good idae to have an overly visible weapon. Beretta, Sig, HK,and Glock are all good weapons, all Mil tested (by various countries). Personally, I prefer Glock because it has fewer springs, and fewer parts overall. The feces hitting the oscillator may or may not be "overnight". Given the incremental nature of Big Government and the UN, being able to sustain your own gear, with or without pick-ups, could be a big plus.

As to why many choose things other than Beretta's classic- its big, compared to the others. ;)...and some folks don't like slide-safeties.

I have a Glock 21 and the smaller Glock 30 with 1000 rounds of ammo. Both double stack 45 ACP and the 30 will accept the 21 mags. An AR-15 with 1000 rounds of ammo. 500 rounds of OO buck 12 gauge shotgun ammo and for now a Remington 1100 to shoot it with but would like an 870 some day. No, these are not in my BOB. They are in my safe when I'm not on duty. I always carry a pistol off duty. The rest of the guns/ammo are ready grab and go if need be.

I don't have a BOB. I have a small 8 gallon backpack full of mostly boxes of rifle ammunition, a few boxes of pistol ammo, and many full rifle mags, a few full pistol mags and a few essentials. I have a fullsize USP 9mm ON me always, and a lot of spare mags. I also have a semi automatic heavy caliber rifle next to the backpack, and that stuff stays with me everywhere except out on the town or in the grocery shop. That's just my "overnight bag". If in doubt, I start putting ammo crates and food+a little water in my trunk (that's right, not a truck...), like I would have to abandon my base (home ;D ) and take them back out when international things blow over again, until next time.

Hmmm, I think I'm gonna stock up the cabin with food and ammo, never occured to me since I have another retreat which is much closer and much better supplied and located. I guess the cabin is the absolutely last "fallback position". Wouldn't hurt to put a few steel 4 gallon cans of gasoline and some cans of that chemical you put in gasoline to make it stay fresh (benzene?) a couple of places along the route(s) there either.

Ruger Standard Model, 4-3/4" barrel (MK I), in an El Paso Saddlery 1927 thumbreak holster. Also some spare Ruger 9-rd. magazines and a couple of Ram-Line 12 rd. mags (the old ones that actually worked!) . Two of the mags are in a covered clip pouch (also by EPS) while the others are in a zip-loc bag, along with one of those thumb-saver loading tools (HKS, I believe). Around 1,000 rd. of those bulk-packed Federal .22's. Of course, I also have an AR-15 in one of those "assault rifle" cases with spare mags (loaded, occasionally swap out ammo/mags to avoid spring-set) and cleaning supplies.

I settled on the G17 for my BOB a few years back. I have two (his and hers G17s) of them and have never had a malfunction with either. I carry a few spare parts so the fact that I can detail strip a Glock with nothing but a handcuff key or 3/32" punch is a big plus. I don't worry about rust with the tennifer finish. And I you can pack a whole lot of ammo into just a few mags. It makes sense to me. ;)

I carry a 1911 in some form or another everyday and the more time I spend with Glocks, the more they make sense to me. But they're still ugly. :)

I keep a Ruger Mk III Target long barrel with an ATN red dot sight and a 1000 rounds of assorted hyper velocity hollow points in my BOB, which is a large internal frame civilian backpack. I keep a Sig P229 with 9mm, 40 S&W and 357 Sig barrels in my Wilderness Safepacker attached to the pack's waist belt. Finally, I keep a FAL stg 58 with a Trilux SUIT scope and 6 -20 round mags of 308 soft point nearby in a rifle case. I figure that if I need to, one way or the other, I can take down any land based creature native to the western hemisphere. Except for the FAL, which has an unquestionably evil look, I would appear to be just another backpacker.

Currently I don't have a pistol in the BoB, and figured (given our location) that we'd be bugging in anyway, for the most part. That said, the BoB does contain a sealed bag of 50 rounds .380 Auto HPs for my Bersa Thunder. The Bersa is my carry weapon, so its always close.
No one has yet mentioned a cleaning kit. I also have a 9mm bore snake, solvent and oil.

Perhaps I should get a couple of extra mags to throw in the BoB.

Not to derail the thread, but why would you put a gun in a BOB?

My BOB is a 72 hr bug out bag to get me home or out of the area.
Since I have a carry permit and carry a P12 with a spare +2 mag I'll have a handgun on me for self defense purposes.
Since I have food in the BOB for 72 hrs I won't need to hunt for food.

That is a valid question. I can't answer for everyone but I can answer for myself.

I carry a 1911 whenever I leave the house and most of the time that I am in the house with one notable exception - I don't carry on my body at the office. Since my BOB goes with me everywhere, it just so happens to be a convenient and discreet way of carrying a handgun off of my body, especially when I can't carry on my body.

S&W 686-6 in .357 Its super accurate, super reliable, and you can take down small game with it in a pinch. However I dont see leaving my m4gery or my xd45 behind. Not to mention the 1911 I carry everywhere I go. But the .357 smith is ready to go in my BOB.
