Beautiful, guys! As far as old ones go, I have a SW 17 from the early seventies:

a H&R 922 from 1960:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v187/bwperdue/922.jpg

and a S&W 15 Combat Masterpiece coming from a friend in Florida:

Ummm,

Those are not old school to me.* They work as good as they ever did.

bwperdue
04-08-2006, 11:44 PM
True, functionally.* "Old school" to me means something from a time that will not be repeated, having been superceded by something (supposedly) "better." However, they just don't make them like they did even thirty years ago anymore..."Old school" to me is blued steel and wood, preferably walnut.* Even the low-brow H&R has a better trigger on it than many new-manufacture revolvers I've shot.* My Winchester 97 shotgun falls into the same category for me.

Not to take anything away from modern designs, either, as I really, really like my Glock 26 and AR, too.

I suppose we could even call Ol' Slabsides "old school," since in its pure form it doesn't have rails, polymer, radioactive bits, lasers, or titanium on it.

I feel just about as safe with a S&W 19 with 3 or 4 inch barrel as any selfloader.

I own and use both, there are still some advantages to revolvers to this day.

I actually prefer to carry one of each. I will sometime explain why I like to carry one of each rather than to autoloaders. I think you will find my reasoning sound.

bwperdue

I feel just about as safe with a S&W 19 with 3 or 4 inch barrel as any selfloader.

I agree with you on that; my physique and wardrobe just makes it a little hard to conceal something like a 4" 6 shot revolver!

I'd like to hear about the "carry both" idea!

The Closer

You gotta love the wheelguns!!! When I go hunting I always carry a Ruger .357, rather than an auto in the same caliber.

JonSidneyB
04-09-2006, 12:50 AM
Ok,

I will explain the reasons now but I can be long winded so forgive me.

After I was involved in my shooting, the department of corrections told me that they guys in jail were saying their buddies were going to get me.* Well nothing ever happened but I started becoming extra vigilant.*

When I would come home I would have the autoloader in hand (rural area) but as I got close to the house, I would switch to revolver before I past the srubs and got onto the front porch wich has walls on three sides and if something happened it would be close quarters.

The gun I would change over to was a 3 inch .357 J-Frame.* My reasoning is this.

Reason No1 for a revolver is use in contact distance activity, if anything contacts the slide of a automatic, a misfeed can occur.* This will not happen with a revolver.* If you are wrestling arouind with a gun, the gun may have to be shot inverted and limp wristed, this can cause a failure to feed at times.
If I am going to be wrestling with someone while trying to use a handgun, the revolver seems more positive for me. / Reason No2/ Also the bad primer does happen once in awhile, rare but it does happen.* With a revolver, it goes to the next cartridge, its hard to clear a a gun if you are wresting around with someone..

Reason No3.* This applies to small bobbed and concealed hammer revolvers.* Put a small automatic in your front pocket.* Ok, now get it out quickly.* It's actually hard to do.* Now try this with a small revolver, your hand gets around the grip many times easier.

Reason No4. Sometimes an auto is more concealable because it is flatter, but sometimes a revolver is more concealable because it is rounder.* Try sticking a small auto in pocket holster in front pocket, often you can tell what it is.* Try a Centenial revolver in front pockets of the pants with a proper pocket holster, it does not look like a gun.

Reason No5.* Inside the* pants works well if you have as little as a blousy shirt, under a T-shirt, thats a different matter.* bob the hammer and put a hip grip on it.* You can conceal a 3 inch L-frame like that if you wanted to.* I would rather carry a J-frame like that but a revolver with hip-grip vanishes under even a fairly tight T-shirt.

Reason No6.* Jacket pockets.* This is where the Centenial shines.* In pants pocket a steel Centenial is fine since the wieght is close to the body.* In jacket pockets you want one of the lightweights.* I am content with the 442 for this.* If you sence trouble, slip your hand into your jacket pocket.* If you end up in trouble, the shot from the gun already in hand is much faster than drawing the auto loader from your hip.* With the Centenial, you can shoot right through the pocket if you have to.* When I was involved in my shooting, a person just before had a gun pointed at him while he had his hands in his pockets.* If he had a Centenial he could have been pointing right back without the criminal ever knowing.

Reasn No7.* Weak hand backup.* most Automatics are not set up for use in the left hand with only one hand available it can be very difficult.* The revolver as long as you do not need to reload is more friendly to the left hand if only using one hand.* If someone is going to grap you while you have a gun out, it is likely to be the gun arm.* If you are having trouble keeping control of the gun arm, you might be able to draw your small lefty revolver and blow the guy off of your gun arm (again wrestling with a gun, this is revolver country).* Also when firing from cover the shooting hand can easily get hit meaning you need a gun for the left hand.* The left hand gun can also act as a backup for your right handed gun.* It is faster to draw your left hand gun, transer to right hand than to reload your main gun.

Ok,,, those are most of my reasons to have both a revolver and an automatic if you do end up needing a gun on the street.* The automatic does have some advantages, the revolver has others.* Both can deliver accurate fire, both have enough energy against two legged targets but there are different.* If you have both, you can play to the advantages they have over each other.

For sometime after my shooting, I carried a 9x23 auto on the right hip instead of behind the hip like I usually prefer, behind the hip carried a 3-inch .357 J-frame.* In the jacket pockets I had airweight Centenials in each jacket pocket.* I think .38 special is a little light but still in the ball park.* If when paranoid while walking after the shooting, hands were in the pockets.* It would have looked bad for me to be fondling the Auto on the Hip if I sensed trouble but none was there.* I did consider the full sized 9x23 to be the main gun and would draw if first if I thought I had time to do that unless I was already at contact distance, then I would go for the revolver.

As time went by and nothing happend, I started reducing my load. I always have a Centenial revolver where my left hand can get to it. One is either in a left jacket pocket or left pants pocket. Behind the right him is a full sized auto unless its summer, and I am only wearing a T-shirt. Then I resort the a hip gripped revolver behind the hip.

I have been thinking about a really small gun for wallet style carry. Now for that an auto is the only choice.

Sounds like sound reasonng to me! I especially agree with 1, 2, 4, and 6. The other ones I haven't put as much thought into (as maybe I should), but definitely make sense.

I've based most of my carry decisions on concealability issues, due to my daily environments. The thought you've put into the two-gun mode based on those circumstances trumps a lot of gun-mag theory...

Dang, those are some beautiful guns everybody! IMO, you cannot be a wheelgun and levergun combo for most any situation...in fact I plan to make my home defense and bugout guns a .357 mag. levergun and wheelgun combo.

Don't get me wrong, autos have their place but there is just something about a levergun and revolver that just speak to me!

I like the Auto/Revolver combo too.
mine is a Colt .45 Gold Cup 70 Series National Match/.357 Ruger sp101
they aint small but then anything bigger than my NAA .22 LR is BIG!
You could consider them old school but they've done a lot of teaching at the range.

The only wheel gun I have any more that I occasionally carry for CCW (and definitly everday in hunting season) is this one, and I only do it when I am feeling especially macho, and wearing the clothing appropriate to hide this brute.

I had a Detective Special snub for a short time that I carried, but got rid of it. Small .38 snubs were the only handgun I have shot that I honestly disliked, little bugger stung more than this brute with full power loads, even before I had the work done at Magnaport on the Ruger. My wife confiscated the only other wheel gun I would carry for CCW, my 4 inch .357.

This one is going on 20 years old or better now.

Great pic and Revolver sir! can't agree more although it is a necessary evil for I. BUT I have a 12 gauge shotgun with a 6 inch tube (serbu super shorty), Literally ! That kicks LESS than my Ti-38 snubby...sooo true...BUT just try and stick that shotty in your front pocket on those 100 degree Fl nights ;)

the only 1911 i have currently is a bone stock, blue combat commander with ivory grips. i have a first issue dick special with grips made of the same tusk. both have that nice dark colt blue that they used to do. my last one, at the same time as the compact kimber, was a springer champion ss loaded. i really like that one and wish i haden't so stupid as to sell it.

I once owned a 6" Colt Python .357 Revolver with that traditionally-shaped goncalo alves wood stock. It was THE best finished firearm that I had ever owned. It must cost an uneconomical amount to finish firearms like that in today's market. I have not seen such work recently. :sigh:

colt used to do a great job, of course 1911's have gotten batter recently and colts are the most problem prone 1911's i have owned. of course these were the older ones that had problems right from the box. very few have that sort of problems today.

Finally, a gun topic that I feel comfortable in. :)

The newest gun I own is probably a Colt Gold Cup, Mk IV/Series 70. I used to have a pre-'72 Colt DS in nickel. I thought it looked kinda flamboyant so I sold it. Should have kept it. Since it wasn't in mint condition, I could have had it refinished. Darnit. Shot real nice, too.

A few months ago, my friend got one of these:

http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/1771/capballnn8.png (http://imageshack.us)

It's a cap-and-ball, black powder .54 muzzleloader. He got it mostly because it's cheap, it's not legally considered a firearm, and it's powerful enough to take down an angry boar.

I recently had the chance to shoot an old-style .454 revolver that's designed to rotate when fired (sort of like AirForceShooter's, I believe), and the hammer bit me so thoroughly that it made a gash at the base of my thumb. The same night, I tried a (more modern, admittedly) .357 Magnum, and it was such a pleasure to shoot.

I like the old-school pieces, but not the kind that rotates. Those are weird.
