The only board game I enjoyed playing on occasion is chess. My stepfather was an avid chess player. . . and he wasn't the type many would think would be caught playing such a game considering the stereotypical portrayal of those who play chess on television. Anyways, he had an antique chess set that he gave to me. I keep it under my bed, polishing it every now and then.

I like chess, and checkers. My wife is always wanting me to play Monopoly, but I hate the idea of sitting there all night to find out I am broke (I already knew that), or that the money, and property I now have is only fake! :tickedoff:

The Settlers of Catan.

A great boardgame for the whole family, playable and fun for both avid gamers and non-gamers alike.

Chess is my favorite. I"m a control freak, (always have been) and chess is the only game so far that I've found that relies solely upon the skill of the player. Luck does not enter the equation anywhere. Besides, I like logical thinking exercises, and chess is good for that too!

My vote would have to be for chess as well. My dad taught me to play at age 6 and I've enjoyed it ever since.

Chess for me I never could figure out Checkers (I got the "hop stuff thing" just never got the why) in Chess it is you; the King fighting another King deciding whom lives whom dies and why. My son is not bad at it but prefers PS2 stuff.

I'm going to take a step sideways and name Kill Doctor Lucky (http://www.cheapass.com/products/boardgames/cag001.html). Some days you just want to kill someone. But everyone else wants to kill him, too.

We used to play that game all the time when I was a kid. Anyone play Chutes and Ladders?

Makarov, I like Settlers of Catan too - great game. What's great about it to me is being able to mod it using home rules (like 12-sided die, or not using the thief and letting the person who rolled a 7 pick whichever card they want from the resource "bank"). Helps the game move faster.

If you like Settlers, you'd probably like Ticket to Ride, too...super great game, even with just two players. Totally addicting and fast moving.

Yeah...Risk...that's a great one! My buddies and I would have Risk all-nighters during the week-ends and summers in the long ago time before video games.

I like Risk too. It's a great strategy game when you've got more people who want to play a game than the two that can play chess. My only gripe about it is that yeah, there is a little bit of luck in the outcome because battles are decided by a roll of the dice.

When I was little, I loved Chutes and Ladders.

I did a quick search and found several warm reviews. I'll look into this one, thanks ;)

Chess is my favorite. My late uncle who was member of the Special Forces in Vietnam taught me how to play as a kid. The only time he would talk about Vietnam was when we would play chess.

Cribbage.

A deck of cards, the board & pegs, and at least one of my family members and settle in for a night of good ole name callin'.

Probably backgammon. It's a great game. Easier to learn than chess, but hard to master. There is an element of chance which means a beginner can sometimes beat an expert. It is a relatively fast game - to play chess well you need 10 or 15 minutes per move.

I also liked Diplomacy, especially playing by email, but it takes too much time for me now.

Really I prefer card games. Whist, rummy, hearts etc - games with a bit of skill involved. If I could find a small pack of cards I'd consider adding them to my semi-EDC waist-pack.

Scrabble, hands down. Although another of my all-time favorite games (though not a board game,) is Apples to Apples. It is, I believe, the single most entertaining game I've ever played.

Yeah, as a lover of words, I think Scrabble rules. I like cribbage, too. I used to play it in the evenings with a rugby player from New Zealand on field trips. We drank beer, played cribbage, and listened to him sing rugby songs. And blushed a lot.

Still love backgammon and checkers--our eight-year-old is a checker shark.

RISK! Great game. Good for large parties and long nights. After a few games, you start to see everyday events in a Risk-like strategy. :uglystupid2:

I was introduced to Settlers of Catan a couple of weeks ago. Pretty cool game. I just picked up the other two Risks: 2210AD and Godstorm - Godsomething, at any rate - for our monthly game nights. My brother and i've already started coming up with house rules for the latter. Not too surprising considering how many we had for the original. One of the ads that came with the game mentioned Battle Cry, which is a Civil War-based strategy game. Seemed pretty interesting, but unfortunately it's already out of print. Just watched one go on e-bay for about $70.

Yes I do. Words rule! Even gave the kids Scrabble Jr. There is no escaping the proper use of words in this house. :lolhammer:

Well, chess is a great game, no doubt -- utterly classic and always will be.

I'm not very accomplished at it, though, and don't have anyone to play with generally (on my level or otherwise), so I don't get much enjoyment out of it these days. (I played a bit recreationally against my roommate in college, and that's about the last time I played!)

From my days living with my family growing up, I would have to say that my favorite game was "Taboo". We had some good times with that one, although it was discovered late, and we didn't have years of playing it before we all left the nest.

Our family also loved "Pictionary" and "Trivial Pursuit", but our strong point was playing various card games.

Back in 2000, my parents sold the house, and my brother discovered during all the tumult, my parents' old Cribbage board, and I think that's when he had someone teach him to play. Since then, my whole family plays it when we get together. My dad and sister live near each other, and they are always playing "series" of Cribbage (best of 3, best of 5...) When Dad visits me we play. When he visits bro, they play. :)

I like Scrabble. My family plays that sometimes.

A couple of my high school friends played Risk, but I never caught on, and the one time I ever played I got my butt handed to me, I believe. I would like to learn that and play it. (I figure it's probably playable online somewhere, but I prefer to learn it on the actual board.)

I need to get a Cribbage board and re-learn that game. I had so much fun playing it.

I never did figure out Risk either...

Risk is a great game. My father, brother and I would play that game all the time. Father was in the military. I don't know if that had anything to do with it, but he would always kick our butts. He came by to visit 2 months ago. Nothing changed. He somehow still kicked our butts.

I forgot about cribbage. I think i still have the track around here somewhere. My mom *loves* Scrabble.
