There is a lot of talk about what makes a good EDC handgun. What I want to know here is what are you using today. And if you want, tell us why that one.

Mine is a Kel-Tec P-3AT. When I bought it, it was the best combination for me of small, light, large caliber and cost.

I EDC a Glock 23. Rounded trigger gaurd, and high visability magazine indicators. The custom job I did myself to make CC, and round recognition a litlle easier. The 23 is a compact, but not sub compact, and while it is mainly in MPB with mod it fits well in the waistband also.
The reason I use Glock...Lay it in the mud, drive over it with a truck, pick it up, pull the trigger, and it goes bang. Works everytime, no fumbling for safety. I picked this quote up elswhere but it is a mantra worth memorizing.
"Keep yer booger hook off the bang switch"

When I carry, it is a Springfield XD9 service 4" barrel, 15 round mag. I have found that with the right hoslter I can conceal the XD as well as my Smith 2" 38spl. No safety to operate. Just grip the handle automatically operates the grip safety. Firing pin is blocked until trigger is in the full rear position.

That was a big selling point on the Glock too. No safety to fumble with.

Yes, I agree. At the time the XD seemed to fit my hands. I still plan to own a Glock in .45ACP.

Most of the Time I carry a Kimber Ultra Elite in a Milt Sparks IWB.
However, no matter what I carry as a primary, I always have a Seecamp 380.The LWS 380 serves as a primary as well.

Glad to see someone else enjoys Mr. Hedley's holsters. My EDC is a Rohrbaugh 9MM -- very light, and it works well for me -- I have a variety of CCW pieces -- revolvers, 1911s, FN 49, etc -- but they were always too uncomfortable, too heavy, too hard to conceal, etc -- basically, kept getting left at home. If I didn't have my R9, I'd be taking a Seecamp, or Tomcat around w. me -- I've found pocket carry to be v. discreet, and easy to get access to, and easy to conceal. I do have a CCW briefcase that I take to work, with my Kimber, and 3 extra mags -- hard to beat a full-size for accuracy and firepower, but I go everywhere I can, legally, w. my R9.

Hi I am new to the forum. My " EDC" was a 9MM Hi Power. Gun laws in South Africa are making it very difficult to carry. Most public places don't allow one to carry handguns, so I mostly take it out at night for self defense. As crime in SA is very high with firearms the government is clamping down on gun ownership, thanks to the UN. We will fight on for our right to self defense.

Thats all for now.

Kimber Series 1 Pro CDP...... why? I've always carried a 1911 style pistol, because they fit my hands well, and I'm proficient with it, and it has thousands of rounds through it without a failure of any kind.

Jay,
I carry an original Kimber Ultra CDP, very close to yours also, and the only problem I have ever had with mine, is when a huge glob of mud got caught in the ejection port and the gun did not return to battery. A cleaning resolved that problem, but then I was able to switch over the the KelTec .380 in my pocket!

I have three firearms that I like to carry depending on what I am wearing. My favorite is a Glock 27, next is a SA 1911 A1 and third is a Ruger P90. I like them all. the Glock is just a little easier to conceal in hot weather.

I have carried a Kimber Eclipse ULE .45 1911 in 3” with Crimson Trace laser sights for over 3 years, but recently switched to a Kimber Ultra CDP II because it is 7 ounces lighter than the Eclipse. The 7 oz make a huge difference in everyday carry. I barely notice that I am carrying with this lightweight aluminum framed 1911.

If I can carry IWB, it's my Glock 26. For pocket carry, it's the S&W 637. For more discreet carry, I go to either the NAA minirevolver or the Beretta 21A. Yes, I am well aware of the limitations of the latter two, but they are better than being :buck2: when the :police: aren't there...

Once I get my CCW, my Bersa Thunder .380 will be my main carry. It is light weight, easy to use and if it came to needing to use it, it features a European design. When you tap the mag in the slide automatically closes and chambers a round.

As you might have guessed from my screen name, I CCW a Glock 19, actually a 19C. Added a set of adjustable Meprolight night sites. I had a 27 but never enjoyed shooting it hence I didn't practice enough with it. The 19 is a joy to shoot so I shoot it a lot more, as a result I'm much better shot with it than I ever was with the 27.

Also, I forgot a few in this shot..! (V - Below - V)

Normally though, either a Seecamp LWS380 (RF) pocket carry, or the same in a
Rohrbaugh R9s. I recently changed my "Park walkin' gun" from an NAA 1 1/8"
Mini Magnum convertable, to an NAA 2' Black Widow w/ standard Magnum
wood laminate grips as opposed to the factory "Big Black Ones!" Of course
always all of the above That are "Pocket Carry Sized"; in a pocket holster of 1 sort or another.
Lastly, I do carry it often, but the Case XX 3 blade was just to be "Silly..!" ;)

* My current edc handguns are a Ruger SP101 in an* IWB holster during warmer months . When it's colder and I'm wearing more/heavier clothes I sometimes carry a Ruger GP100 in a belt holster . I'm still trying to find the "right" holster for both guns . I have A Bianchi for the GP100 that sqeeks when I walk and a cheap uncle mikes IWB for the SP101 . I carry revolvers because I trust them more than semi auto's - no jambs , stovepipes . Some people have said that I should get a semi auto pistol because it holds more ammo - need more in case you have to shoot it out with multiple bad guys . I figure that if I did find myself in a situation where I was up against multiple BG's I'd probably lose out no matter what sort of handgun I have . Only Clint Eastwood wins in a shootout with multiple BG's . But I'm thinking about getting a Ruger 45acp because I always wanted a 45 . Maybe if I do get one and shoot it enough I'll change my mind about trusting semi auto's .

Springfield 1911A1 in .45 caliber.

I got it because it had everything I wanted already installed, including night sights.

It's also easy to operate and maintain, the trigger is very crisp, it balances well in my hand, and it's accurate enough to "do the job" at 50 yards or more.

Yup, thats what I use. In some ways can be faster than loader. read one article of a trainer that advocates slightly unorthodox technique with the strips. Main emphasis is to recharge the loads quickly to get back into the fray, which he points out is the wheel gun's main down fall.
So reload four rounds with the strip, then close cylinder and engage. Especially helpful for 5 shots. then you will be firing quickly and keep pulling the trigger when you click on the empty cylinder to get to the unspent rounds.

I suppose it would be useful in situations where you may be close and volume of fire was key. The idea for this being that you can waste too much time trying to get that last "1" into the 5 shot. Also of you have to reload after that second cylinder, you will have two shots left on the strip instead of one.

Personally I carry a J frame and keep my strips full with 6. Have seen others that will load only 5 is thats all their peice will hold.

I am surprised that there are so many wheelies being toted. I like them myself, simple to use like my mouse, point and click

GLOCK 27, for me. Finally saved enough pennies for it, and picked it uo yesterday. Now I just need to find a good holster for it.
Any of you guys have a suggestion??

mtn guy 79,

Others might laugh, but try a Glock Sport/Combat belt holster at about $12-$15 if you like belt carry. I have one that I've used for over 13 years that still works fine. It holds the gun close and secure and even will conceal under an untucked polo shirt.

If you prefer IWB carry, there are lots of choices. Try Alessi Talon or Fist kydex for starters. Good luck, holsters can be expensive until you find a good one that suits your body, style of carry and lifestyle.

Depending on the weather conditions, it's pretty warm in Texas right now, I carry either my Kel Tec P32 or Bersa T :D380. Both of those will conceal pretty easy without wearing a coat or other outer garment. :agree:

I have inthe past carried a G23 G19 and currently am carrying a SIG P229 in .40 with night sights. Wish I could have kept the Glock but the funding wasn't there. This is my second SIG, sold it for the G19, and wish I would have stuck with the first and supplementd from there. I hae sense came full circle back to the SIG. I would however like to have anothe Glock to companion the SIG.

I recently purchased a 1911a1 and have been EDCing it for a few days. I borrowed a clip-on IWB holster and have been carrying it strong side just behind the hip. I'm amazed by how concealable it really is. I think with the 7 round mag it would be even more so (no step like shape at the magwell caused by the "extended" mag an slam pad)

While it is doable in a T-shirt with a loose polo / golf shirt for cover, it sure makes my pocket revolver seem comfortable and easy. Even in MN, adding a secod layer over the holster gets a bit warm.

It really depends on what I'm doing, what I'm wearing, day or night. My #1 go to gun is my Glock 21. The largest thing I carry is a 4" S&W 57; the smallest is a Makarov. In between is usually a S&W 19 (2.5"), or a 66 (3").

Depending where I'm going, what I'm doing and time of year....anything from a NAA .22mag or a Seecamp .32acp, to a S&W 642 or HK P7M8 up to a Glock 22 or my Colt Gold Cup...

I was taught to shoot by my WWII vet grandpa'pa, aside from the regular "a small gun in your hand is better then big gun in the car" he also really hammered home the fact that constant practice
with all your weapon's is a must.(knive's etc, too) that said, I have owned only a few of the main small, medium, and large frame handgun's/pistol's.
* * * * Since i no longer carry for a job(put my self through school working for my families collecton/bond/skip trace company) I now own only a para warthog 45 W/ new improved breach and extracator, and two "old reliable" beretta 950 bs 25 acp's. these get a good laugh but with hornady XTP++ JHP's or cor-bon JHP's, I am sure the target won't be laughing.

* * * * * I do like big gun's too, owned couple SW's: 357 & a 44, and traded the 44m for a DE .50, (another chuckle gun to most) I loved it, less recoil by far over a big bore pistol, and mine was accurate, and reliable for such a missle launcher. (unfortunately had to sell to pay some medical bill's)
* * * * * *
I am also sorta old school in that i prefer auto's, but prefer them with a visable hammer.
love glock's whole concept and realise how safe they are but just can't get around no hammer (DA or SA) love my 9mm beretta 92(oops forgot that one) with the hammer drop mod, which I am sure is less safe than a glock. I may be getting over it though, looking for some newer pocket gun's
I really would like a NAA 380 or 32, and esp the roarbough (sp?) 9mm. I can't believe how small and well made it look's,, and great review's.
* * * * * * * * I just think it's real important no matter what you carry to know the +'s* -'s of your gun
and practice so much that it's strength's are well ingrained. and let's hope we never have to use them. VDG

My favorite EDC: Steve Woods Custom Combat Lightweight Commander, .45 ACP, NP3 finish. I had this pistol custom built with all my requested features. It's 100% reliable and has target grade accuracy; carries very easily and is beautiful to the eye. It was well worth the investment I made at the time. I have used this pistol for every course I ever took and for qualification. I have developed all my muscle memory with this particular pistol. When I carry it my auto pilot takes over :-)

Concealed Carry is illegal in this state unless you are Judge, corrupt politician, PI, LEO, or JBT (but I repeat myself).*
Additionally, the lowly citizenry of this deityforsaken state may not imply, joke, or poise (unclearly), even on the interweb, that they disagree with, might have violated, planned to violate, or thought somewhat hard about not following any of great laws crafted by our "betters".
>:(

I've EDC'd some or all of these items in my home (abode), on my land, and/or place of business in compliance with our local laws 720 ILCS 5/24-1(a)(4).

Except for the Microtech Scarab DE...that too would be illegal.* In fact, I don't even own one. :-X

Luckily outside of my home/work, I EDC two fists full of Sarcasm.

Alternates between 3inch Smith Model 60 .357, CZ-75, or Tanfoglio 9x23 long slide or compact. This depends on what I am wearing that day and sometimes none of that list is carried. I always have one of my J-frames in a pocket as well, left pocket or right pocket is dictated by if I have one of the other guns listed on me or not.

So is that a 17 or a 19? The 19 is almost perfect for CC purposes. It's usually the grip that prints in my experience.

Some call the lack of a safety a feature not a bug. Personally, I went with a XD for a slight safety advantage (and it fit me better).

My Firearms instructor carries a Glock with NO sights precisely because it has no safety. He had a DGU where his lizard brain was having trouble deciphering the strange S F switch ... Amazing what happens when the adrenaline dumps and the ****.

What I carry depends on my attire. When I can get away with it, which is usually, an untucked shirt will cover up an IWB holster carrying one of many Glocks, a K-frame 357 magnum 3" S&W, or something else from the Powernoodle arsenal.

When the shirt must be tucked in, its a Kahr PM9 or Kel-tec P32 in front pocket.

It's a Glock 17. Buddy of mine has a XD. I like both, but the Glock fits my larger-than-average hands a little better. Not sure I would ever be comfortable firing a handgun with a smaller frame.

As for the safety issue ... depends on the situation, I suppose. You might get the drop on a perp in a DGU situation and have the luxury of flipping a safety/loading a magazine/chambering a round, and you might not. If you need to draw quickly, there is greater potential for trouble with a Glock, XD, or similar design when a round is chambered.

I store mine with a magazine loaded and no rounds chambered. It's not in my nightstand but is close to my bedroom, so I expect that needing to chamber a round is not going to be a deciding issue should I need it quickly to defend my residence.

Though I have a couple aquaintances who have jumped through the hoops, it's more trouble than it's worth (to me) to attempt to get a CCW. I do have two 1911s, loaded with original Win. Black Talon easily accessable in the house/shop. The last time I carried was at the Mojave shack on Memorial Day weekend, and it was a Remington model 51 in .380! ;D (The 51 is a very interesting piece! It is supposed to be one of the two best "pointing" pistols ever made- the other being the P-08/Luger which I also have with a "k" receiver date. 1937?- I forget)

Yes this is a very bad picture.* I actually have not kept the mini revolver on a key chain for years, I just stuck it back on for this picture.

To get a size prespective, the 3-inch stainless steel gun is a 5 shot J-Frame .357.

The only guns in this picture that are actually carried is the revolver in the pocket holster, the 3 inch stainless, and the CZ-75.* I have been selling off the guns that I do not use.* My favorite gun is not in the picture but I don't carry it that often as it is a bit heavier than what is seen here.

The CZ-75 long ago replaced my Glock which I recently sold.* The Stainless model 60 conceals wonderfully with the hip grip, I had the rear sights made for this gun as the the adjustable sights would cut me up.*
The 442 in the pocket holster is alway carried.* I switch between the CZ and the Smith depending on how I am dressed. You probably cannot tell from the photo but the Stainless revolvers is a ton easier to conceal than the CZ-75.

I've got a question regarding the use of different handguns on a daily basis...

My EDC (no handgun, as I live in a county with a nazi sherrif :( ) remains constant so I always know what is where in case of an emergency.
That means I always carry the same equipment in the same pockets. (3 flashlights, an e2e kl4 clipped in my left pocket, an arc aaa on my keychain, a titanium cr2 larrylight hanging from my beltloop. cellphone, leatherman juice, pocketchange and cinnamon candies all in my left pocket. car keys in my right pocket, and benchmade ares clipped to my right pocket. Wallet in back left, paper, pen and portable kleenex in back right.)

I've heard it said "beware the man with one gun, for he probably knows how to use it". Wouldn't this doubly apply to the man who carries only one gun?

I really don't know, so maybe I'm making something out of nothing, but I would think you would want to carry a gun that you are 100% familiar with, and automatically know what it is when you need it and your brain goes into emergency mode...

JonSidneyB
11-22-2006, 09:37 PM
Jim,

You heard that one from me.

It is a true statement but you have to take in its full meaning. All else being equal that is true. Assuming equal practice equal natural ability.

Musashi also said focus on one weapon (or was that two) as you are better off to know it well than a little bit about all of the.

On the flip side we could say beware of the mechanic with one tool. That could be pretty scary.

While you can become more proficient useing the same gun for everything, there are also some realities. No one gun is good for everything and there is also the matter of carry.

If this were just 100 years ago or earlier, it would be a little different. We would carry a full sized handgun on our hip in a caliber suitable for anything we will be using a handgun for.

Todays world is a little different, we have to have the gun invisible in town. I can have a variets of identical guns on the same frame. If revolver it could be an N-frame and I could have a .44 mag .357 mag (this would have to be a customs job and kind of a tough one because of the fireing pin) a .22. Three guns, one frame size. This is a large gun but would have worked long ago with open carry. I guess we could still do this but the problem is it still is not always concealable. If .357 was suitable for all my shooting needs. A model 19 and models 17 pair would work. Well, you cannot always hide a K-frame.

We could try this with autoloaders as well. I can get the same gun it 10mm, 9x23, and .22 but this gun still will not always be concealable in todays world.

I have had guns from almost every manufacturer at one time or another. I have decided to settle for two different frames but unfortunately different barrel lenghts.

When I cannot carry a full sized gun, I am going to stick to J-frame revolvers. When I can carry something larger I will stick with something that has the CZ grip shape and layout of the controls. I will be the guy of two gun types but will still be different guns. I do not really use the mini revolvers and might as well get rid of them soon.

I from now on are going to limit myself to Smith Revolvers, and CZ-75 and Tangoglio Custom builds from now on.

I have a CCP ,and carry perhaps only 2-3 months out of the year. One of the areas of town that I work requires seasonal maintenance on equipment and unfortunately, personal protection. At those times I prefer a CZ 75B 9mm. It was chosen because of a excellent hand to grip fit, reliabilty, low muzzle flash, low recoil, and long sight radius for my aging eyes. It also fits my wife and daughters hands and is easily controllable for them, and as such, becoming a home defense pistol if required.

I had a LTC but let it go. It was let that go or let my husband go. Even though I love my guns, they don't compare. :smitten:

So many of you carry! I have a Sig 228 that I would carry if i had a license to do so and a husband who wouldn't freak at the thought! My .22 Beretta 87 Cheetah is also fun to carry, but I am envious of TKC's Seacamp... someday!

What? Your sig. other (no pun intended) is anti gun?

Glock 30, in the car. I live in Southern California, so actually having it on my person equals too much trouble with the law. And getting a CCW Permit here is about as likely a Hillary Clinton being the next Playboy centerfold of the year ::)

He isn't anti-gun, just very uncomfortable with me carrying. I took a great class on safety and shooting. He's fine with the guns in the house as long as he doesn't see them. It's funny because when I go to gun shows, the guys selling are always amused when I tell them that my husband will kill me if I buy another gun. They say it is always the guys saying that!

I am really impressed with all of you who carry! Wow! Now be careful!

.45 ACP Series 70 Combat Commander. Accuracy & trigger work done along with beavertail grip safety. Otherwise stock.
I like some of the newer, lighter polymer guns, but practice and familiarity with your gun are real handy under stress. I was taught to shoot a 1911 in the '60s when it was the "official sidearm" in my outfit. Have seen a lot of practice since and have never seen a need to change.

Well howdy folks, this is a very interesting forum from what I've seen so far.

I carry a Glock 30 daily, along with a Kershaw Boa strong side, and a Kershaw Leek offside.

I carry the Glock 30 no matter the weather. I had a 26, but it wasn't a big enough size difference to make much of a difference when carrying.

Nothing smaller makes me happy, and nothing larger carries as well.

The firearm is a Smith and Wesson M&P .40 Compact. Just big enough with the magazine extender for a good full firing grip. Small enough to conceal well and wear comfortably. This is the gun that out Glocks the Glocks for me. Better ergo, better control reach, better trigger set up, comfortable and interchangable grip swell pads, etc...

the rest of the junk: (Top to bottom, L to R)
Prescription glasses(Sun and regular) and case, Wallet, Gerber multi tool, Cabelas 3 Watt AA LED(55 Lumens, 6 hours runtime, $20 :-)), Home made IWB/OWB adjustable holster (Setup for extreme grip forward cant strong side for access while seated), Speer Gold Dot Hollow Point, S&W M&P40C, Spyderco Delica 4th Gen, Motorola RazR cell, Regular mag (10) and Mag with grip extender (10).

Of course, the evening after I took that picture I received a Surefire E2D flashlight in the mail :-)

Howdy from Texas. Look forward to learning and sharing here.
My EDC handgun is a Colt Defender. I currently use a Milt Sparks SSII or a fanny pack for CCW carry. I also have a Rosen SOS for an extra mag. and Surefire 6P.
I've done a few mod's on the Defender:
Stainless Steel MSH (Profiled to my want's)
Greider short, solid trigger (Sanded off the serrations)
Smooth Alumagrips
Ed Brown mag. catch
Dave Berryhill ring hammer
Original stainless steel Colt Commander grip safety
YoBo Retro rear sight
Removed Series 80 parts and installed Brownells spacer.
I plan on adding a gold bead front sight when I can. I love my little .45 snubby! Ray

It's Summertime and there have been much outdoor activity in the neighborhood and many visitors to our inordinately serene, often dismally blah neighborhood. I see plenty of unfamiliar faces and vehicles. Discouraged by the neighborhood association but not rigorously enforced, there have also been much on-street parking.

I slip the .40 Sig P229 and a spare magazine in the holster and pouch and the .357 S&W 640 in the waistband with a baggy T-shirt over both when taking out the trash and when doing other mundane tasks around the yard.

When I am already home, I tell my family to call me when arriving home so that I can be there, especially at night, to escort them out of their vehicle and into the house.

This is my EDC weapon. It's a Witness compact in 40 S&W. I load it with 180 grain Ranger ammo; and, carry it in a Bianchi 120 size 11 IWB holster on my strong side. If you're looking for a very small B.U.G. (back-up gun), I'd look into getting a Seecamp .32acp or .380. They are small. They disappear in your front or rear pocket (in a holster for me). I have a Seecamp .32 and love it. Also, I've heard good and bad about Kel-Tec .32 and 3AT (.380).

Kimber CDP Pro II. I originally purchased a Glock 23 for carry and found that I'm one of the few people who can't hit anything using a Glock. I sold the Glock and went through some real gyrations between various Kimber, Springfield, Sig, and S&W 1911's (I grew up with a 1911, it's just what I like I guess). To me, the CDP looked the best of them all, and the other makers all had something about them that I didn't care for.

My wife has a CZ 75 Compact that I have to say is one of my favorite guns ever. I didn't care for the concept of a Czech gun originally, but this thing has won me over. I'd carry one in a heartbeat.

Bersa Thunder .380 auto, in a Don Hume open top holster.
I have just picked up a Glock 19 though so I may give that a try and see how that works for me.

got a couple of old school 9mm here. First and Third generation S&W M59 with standard and 17rd mags. When I got the stainless model, seller gave me a few boxes of Federal Hydra-Shok. Are Glaser SafetySlugs still out there? whats the hot defence round these days?

Another wheel gun man here. I've been lugging this around for almost 30 years.

An Italian Beretta 92FS...my second one in ten years. Have to carry a 9mil and It has to be a Beretta because of current duties. Too bad actually, could never shoot it well in double action...even though I'm actually a revolver shooter and fancier. On single action It's decent enough...Other LE I run with nowadays carry a 92DS which is harder to shoot.

My gun is loaded thus: GECO 86gr. BAT-in chamber/5pcs. CORBON 115 +p's/9pcs. IMI 115 standard velocity gold dot lookalikes

Spare mag is loaded with Israeli AP rounds.

Carry it inside the waistband in an Uncle Mikes IWB soft holster or inside my Neatfreak on occasion.
